Outdoorsy suburb with a quaint downtown

All journeys need a beginning: Hopkinton is perhaps best known for being the starting line of the Boston Marathon, but 18,000 residents think it’s a path to nesting down. For starters, Hopkinton is the headquarters for software company Dell EMC, giving stability to the area – $1 million in real estate tax revenue is provided every year. Even though Hopkinton is only 30 miles west of Boston, it can appear a bit rural to those who are used to Boston’s urban layout. But that’s part of the charm, according to Realtor Noune Karapetian with Compass. “There are many gorgeous areas for hiking and outdoor activities, including the Hopkinton and Whitehall state parks. Both parks were created after their respective reservoirs were no longer used as water sources for the greater Boston area.”

Traditional Colonials and Cape Cods

The average listing price for homes is in the low $900,000s but it’s still possible to encounter a property in the $700,000s. For example, homebuyers can find a four-bedroom midcentury Cape Cod for $725,000. These are often renovated and feature lots larger than a quarter acre, surrounded by trees. Other classic styles like farmhouses, ranches and Colonials dot the landscape. These will often come in classic cream or tan tones, but it’s also not out of the ordinary to see a Garrison Colonial in a bold color like hunter green. Streets are wide, and there are even wooded trails near these suburban homes, so it’s common for neighbors to encounter each other out on a stroll or walking dogs. The closer homebuyers move their search to downtown Hopkinton, the more they’ll notice tighter lots and a stronger focus on walkability along sidewalks.

High-marks at Hopkinton Public Schools

Strong schools add to the local attraction. Marathon Elementary has over 550 students, and maintains a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Niche gives the school an overall A. Hopkinton Middle enrolls nearly 1,000 students and scores even higher with an overall A-plus. With over 1,200 students enrolled, Hopkinton High scores an A in clubs in activities for including everything from an Arabic language club to a sailing club.

Hike and picnic outdoors at Hopkinton State Park

Totaling 1,200 acres, Hopkinton State Park is frequently mentioned as the top outdoor recreation option, providing room for kayaking, fishing, hiking, picnicking and swimming. Whitehall State Park is half that size, but it too is covered with trails to explore. EMC Park is located near the middle school and high schools, close to downtown – so it’s a little less immersive than the state parks, but still a great green retreat. Residents will find more typical park amenities, like ballfields and a playground.

Downtown boutiques and grocery shopping at Blue Square Pizza

Indeed, the walkable downtown mixed with small business culture is another draw to Hopkinton. Clustered near the appropriately named Main Street, residents will encounter schools, a local historical society, an arts center and of course eateries, giving a truly cozy feel to this otherwise large suburb. Blue Square Pizza, with its crispy slices and simple décor, is a popular community hangout. Things get sweeter at Muffin House Cafe across the street, where pastries greet patrons from a shiny display case. Grocery options range from big to small, enhancing the foodie vibe of Hopkinton. For large supermarket needs, there's Price Chopper. When it’s time for a more particular ingredient, like local seafood, residents prefer to shop at Morgans Harbor to Hill, which is quaintly decorated with buoys.

Transportation around Hopkinton

Main Street does offer a bike lane, but most residents find that it’s essential to have a car. Interstate 90 is the preferred path to Boston, resulting in a 50-minute commute. Others choose to take the Southboro commuter rail station.

The annual Boston Marathon

Hopkinton is home to the well-known Boston Marathon, starting on Marathon Way in Central Hopkinton and ending in Boston. The event is hosted annually on the third Monday of April, also known as Patriot's Day. On average, the race features about 30,000 runners and attracts over 500,000 spectators, making it New England's most-viewed sporting event.
