Community on the rise in Houma Heights
Houma Heights is separated from downtown Houma by the Intracoastal Waterway, which cuts through Terrebonne Parish’s largest city and seat. Previously a downtrodden section of town, the neighborhood got the spotlight from the Louisiana Office of Cultural Development in 2020 when it was dubbed the Houma Heights Cultural District. The office aims to redevelop key areas and transform them into spots where the community can gather and nourish its local roots. “It’s a lower-income area, so the administration is trying to revitalize it,” says Anne Picou, cultural enrichment administrator for Terrebonne Parish Government’s Quality of Life branch. “The east side really took a hit from 2008 on, when oil and gas went defunct. But that area has potential.”

Houma Heights Cultural District Park
Beneath the overpass on East Main Street, a walking trail winds along the banks of Bayou Terrebonne, forming the Houma Heights Cultural District Park, home of the Louisiana Blackberry Festival. Plans are underway to add a dog park and amphitheater. Across the bayou and the Houma Twin Bridges, the Downtown Marina features a playground and docks where recreational boaters can launch their watercraft.

Louisiana Blackberry Festival in May
Every May, the Louisiana Blackberry Festival celebrates the spring harvest in Houma Heights. Live music, kids activities, and blackberry-themed food and beverages bring energy to the single-day event. Proceeds benefit the Houma Shrine Club and The Hello Foundation. MacDonell Children’s Services, a group home for children in need, co-hosts the celebration and operates from the northwestern corner of the neighborhood.
Shotgun houses and space to build
Houma Heights is primarily residential, with homes making up nearly 90 percent of properties in the area. Shotgun houses and cottages with clapboard siding populate the streets. Some have been updated within the last few years, while others are waiting for renovations. “Some of those houses have a lot of curb appeal; they just haven’t had the TLC over the years,” Picou says. Lots typically measure under a quarter acre, and while some include driveways, others require street parking. In the northern section of the neighborhood, paved sidewalks make it easier to get around, but no pedestrian bridge connects the area to downtown Houma. Vacant lots in Houma Heights might cost $20,000 to $50,000, while cottages and shotgun-style homes sell for $100,000 to $200,000.

Hopping to downtown Houma
Houma Heights is about 1 mile from Terrebonne General Health System as well as restaurants like 531 Liberty Café in downtown Houma. From there, it’s easy to hop on Louisiana Highway 182, which connects to U.S. Route 90 for the 45-mile drive to New Orleans and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Though the hospital and downtown area are technically within walking distance, the only pedestrian access is via Tunnel Boulevard and the Houma Intracoastal Waterway Tunnel just south of the neighborhood. The Good Earth Transit public bus system serves downtown Houma and Chabert Medical Center but doesn’t stop in Houma Heights.

Beer, birria and bargains on Grand Caillou Road
At the junction of East Main Street, Grand Caillou Road is flanked by two bars: Intracoastal Club and Larussa’s Lounge. From the outside, Intracoastal Club is a long, tan building with just a few ground-floor windows, but inside, the bar, dance floor and pool tables are bathed in the glow of multicolored lights. At Larussa’s Lounge, patrons shoot darts or gather at the outdoor bar while sipping cold beer. Down the road, Taqueria Michoacana slings tacos and birria from a tiny red shack with plenty of parking nearby. Thrift store Hope Treasures is on the other side of the parking lot, and Dollar General is right across the street. Rouses Market, also on Grand Caillou Road, is the closest grocery store.
Taqueria Michoacama is the only restaurant in Houma Heights, serving up tacos and more.
Lumiere Blues and Jazz Bistro isn't far and features regular performances.
