Homes, highly rated schools near Bayou Black
Many people recognize Mulberry for its high-rated schools and proximity to local businesses, but one more thing sets it apart. This Houma neighborhood is situated between the Intracoastal Waterway and Bayou Black. “It’s so beautiful to see all the cypress trees and the moss that comes hanging down from them,” says Kelli Guidry, broker associate with Real Broker and former Bayou Black resident. “And the alligators! You’d see these huge, eight-foot, ten-foot alligators rolling down the middle of the bayou because they’d be fighting.” The bayou offers so much more than stunning views. “We have a lot of people that earn their living on the waters, with crabbing and shrimping and fishing,” Guidry says. Mulberry receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Mulberry is bordered by Bayou Black to the north and the Intracoastal Waterway to the south.

Old and new homes by the water
Sidewalks line most of Mulberry’s streets, separating the road from lush grassy lawns often decorated with palm, cypress or oak trees. Wide driveways lead to one- or two-car garages. Older houses were built between the 1950s and 1960s, although several properties were built after 2000. “It’s eclectic in the sense that it’s the old and new all meshed in,” Guidry says. Acadian-style and traditional homes are found across the street from ranch styles. There is also variety among the prices, with most homes costing $200,000 to $350,000 and properties closer to the Intracoastal Waterway ranging from $400,000 to $650,000.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that Mulberry has a relatively high risk of hurricanes. Standard homeowners’ insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is recommended for everyone and required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage. “The closer you are to the Intracoastal, the more costly insurance can be,” Guidry says. “Whereas, if you’re closer to that Bayou Black highway, you are still in a preferred zone where you wouldn’t be required to get insurance per a lender.”

Schools rated B-minus and better
Mulberry is part of the Terrebonne Parish School District. “It’s a highly desirable school district,” Guidry says. Mulberry Elementary School earns an A-minus from Niche and offers kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh and eighth grade are taught at Houma Junior High School, which receives a B-plus. Terrebonne High School, which also has an A-minus, is Louisiana’s second-oldest accredited high school. It offers dual-enrollment courses through Nicholls State University. There are also several private schools in the area, many of which are run by local houses of worship. St. Bernadette School, unrated by Niche, serves pre-kindergarten through seventh grade. Vanderbilt Catholic High School is graded B-plus and has eighth through 12th grade.

Like most of Houma, Mulberry is car-dependent. Bayou Black Drive is a major road that leads directly into Downtown Houma, about 3 miles away. It eventually connects with U.S. Route 90. The closest airport is Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, about 47 miles away. Terrebonne General Hospital is about a 4-mile drive.
Mulberry Park and recreation center
While many residents spend their time on the bayou, many other recreational activities exist in and around Mulberry, including Mulberry Park. It is a smaller park with a playground, and pickleball and basketball courts have recently been added. “It has an open field where flag football teams, softball teams, all different things have practice,” Guidry says. The Bayou Black Recreation Center is about 4 miles away. Guidry says the parish has “put a lot of love” into the center, renovating many of its amenities in the past few years. During the summer, people can cool off in the pool or run around the splash pad. There is also a full gym that patrons can take advantage of. The main branch of the Terrebonne Parish Library is about 2 miles away and offers Storytime, art classes and clubs

Big Mike’s BBQ Smokehouse opened in 2007 and is known for its smoked brisket and award-winning barbecue sauce, which won the vinegar base category at the 2017 American Royal Barbecue Sauce Contest. Downtown Houma offers plenty of options about 3 miles away. Guidry recommends Dominique’s Wine Boutique & Bistro, which is open for lunch every Tuesday through Friday. While people can eat in, Guidry says that the entire menu is available to-go. “You can grab it whether it’s gumbo, soups, all sorts of good stuff,” she says. The closest grocery store is Rouses Market. Target, Walmart and Home Depot are all about 3 miles away.

Locals look forward to Rougarou Fest
The city of Houma has a full calendar of events throughout the year. Every October, people dress up in costumes and attend a community favorite, the Rougarou Fest. It is inspired by the classic folklore of the Rougarou, a werewolf-like creature that roams the bayou. Attendees can enjoy live music while chowing down on Cajun food or riding carnival rides. There is a costume contest and a howling contest. The weekend's highlight is the Krewe Ga Rou Parade, held on Saturday night. Rather than traditional floats, many opt to decorate boats with giant puppets and costumed characters. The Rougarou Queen leads the parade. All proceeds from the weekend benefit the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center.
