Walking distance to downtown Houma
Since Hurricane Ida struck in 2021, Houma has been rebuilding. The Louisiana city of 30,000 has seen a recent resurgence in its downtown area, where brewpubs and bistros line the banks of Bayou Terrebonne. That energy and resilience is spilling over into nearby neighborhoods like North Houma. The Intracoastal Waterway flows along the neighborhood’s eastern edge before intersecting the bayou at the Downtown Marina, one of many spots buoyed by recent reinvigoration efforts. Although the bayou forms a natural border between North Houma and downtown, nearby bridges keep the neighborhood mere steps from the Terrebonne General Health System and the buzz of West Main Street. “They’re refurbishing downtown Houma, so you’re within walking distance of all that,” says Dana Theriot, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Bayou Partners. “And the homes tend to hold a little more value.”

Down at Downtown Marina
Houma residents and recreational boaters enjoy safe harbor at the Downtown Marina. Fuel services aren't far, and the landscaped park features a walking track where boaters can stretch their sea legs. Cool statues and a creative playground appeal to younger visitors, too. A short walk down Park Avenue leads to the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, a celebration of the bayou’s influence on local culture. The museum hosts live Cajun bands on Tuesday afternoons and is popular for school field trips. Maple Avenue Park features a central location and plenty of open space for running around or relaxing, with shady trees, picnic tables and swings. Farther north, the winding exercise path at Glenn F. Pope Memorial Park is a good place to run laps or take an afternoon stroll.

Starter and shotgun-style homes
Unlike the downtown area across the bayou, North Houma is primarily residential, featuring a mix of homes dating to the mid-20th century. However, the market in this area is sluggish. Homes tend to languish on the market for over 100 days, more than twice the national average of 44. Shotgun-style and starter homes typically cost $100,000 to $250,000; some vacant lots or investment properties might be priced from $20,000 to $100,000. The average lot measures under a quarter acre, with patches of lawn and paved driveways. Sidewalks border most streets, making for an easy walk downtown.

Gator bites at Bayou Star Café
Park Avenue winds alongside Bayou Terrebonne and is punctuated by several casual dining spots. The Pit Stop advertises “your breakfast after dark,” serving its signature build-your-own hash and three-egg omelets all day. Cajun specialties like gator bites, crawfish étouffée and shrimp and oyster po’boys are on the menu at Bayou Star Café. Time Stop convenience store sells ice and sundries right up the road. Hunters can take freshly harvested venison to Mickey Browns Hot Tamales and Deer Processing on Bergeron Street to be deboned and vacuum-packed. For groceries, ALDI and Walmart Supercenter are about a mile away, and Downtown Marina hosts a farmers market on the first Saturday of every month.

Learning at Legion Park Elementary
Legion Park Elementary is conveniently located in the center of the neighborhood, within walking distance of most homes west of New Orleans Boulevard. Niche gives the elementary school a B-minus. Houma Junior High School is a short drive away on St. Charles Street and earns a B-plus. Terrebonne High School, also on St. Charles Street within a quarter mile of the junior high, also gets a B-plus.
Baby backs at Bayou Terrebonne Boucherie
North Houma residents are steps away from the festivals that spice up the downtown area throughout the year. One of Louisiana’s largest Mardi Gras celebrations brings parades, marching bands and colorful beads to the streets alongside Bayou Terrebonne. The Bayou Terrebonne Boucherie, held in March, centers around a pork barbecue. In October, folks dressed in muumuus compete in the Maw Maw Walker Stroll’s costume contest.
A short walk to Downtown Houma
Downtown Houma is less than a mile away and accessible via several bridges, most of which have sidewalks to make the trip easier for pedestrians. Terrebonne General Health System sits on the other side of New Orleans Bridge near the Intracoastal Waterway, and downtown offers a variety of dining and drinking opportunities. The bridge is part of New Orleans Boulevard, which leads north to U.S. Route 90 for the best route to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, 45 miles away. The Barataria Avenue Bridge takes pedestrians to the Main Bus Terminal of Houma, the primary hub for Good Earth Transit system buses.
