South Side offers proximity to Downtown Houma
Generations of Houma residents have lived in Houma's South Side, and it's only attracting more and more residents. "I was born and raised in Houma, and it's all about family and food here," says Realtor Liz Hebert with Coldwell Banker. "It's a generational area where everyone knows each other, but it's still desirable for new residents who are updating some of the homes." Hebert also notes how desirable this neighborhood is, with its proximity to downtown Houma's shops, restaurants and events. It's also near some of the city's largest employers. "Terrebonne General Hospital is very close, so there are lots of medical professionals who live in this area so they can walk to work," Hebert says. With its access to downtown and other commercial areas, there's little wonder why South Side Houma is as desirable as Hebert says.
Budget-friendly homes with renovated exteriors and limited flood zones
Houma's South Side was developed between the early and mid-20th century, and many of its older homes have undergone renovation. Houses are densely packed into the grid-like network of sunny streets and sit on small, green lots with tidy front lawns adorned with flowering mulberry trees. Most homes are either cottages, shotgun houses or ranch-style homes. Prices here typically range between $140,000 and $200,000, slightly above the prices of neighboring communities like West End due to their updated interiors and exteriors. The South Side is vulnerable to flooding and hurricane damage, and homeowner's insurance is considered necessary, though deductibles may be expensive. “Another benefit of this area is that a lot of it is high ground, so flooding may not be as bad as in other areas,” Hebert says. Flood insurance is also another necessity, though residents may enroll in the National Flood Insurance Program.
Terrebonne Parish School District
Terrebonne Parish School District serves South Side students who attend public school. Southdown Elementary earns a B-minus rating from Niche, and Houma Junior High earns a B-plus. Students may then attend A-minus-rated Terrebonne High, which Niche ranks in Louisiana's Top 5 Standout High Schools. The school has a Career Compass Program, which creates individual graduation plans for students in grades eight through 11 and provides college and career coaching in grade 12.
Fishing at Jim Bowie Park and other recreation areas
The green space closest to the neighborhood is Jim Bowie Park, a small green space on Bayou Black. It's a modest park that's served the area for years, where locals may go fishing or have a picnic near the water. "We say we have the best fishing in the world," Hebert says. Other community spaces nearby include Harmon Park and Shady Oak Park; both are modest grassy spaces with a playground and a few picnic tables. Residents can travel west on Bayou Black Drive to go hiking on the Mandalay Nature Trail or use the Bayou Black Recreation Center pool.
Close to Houma's favorite restaurants
South Side is close to eateries and entertainment venues along Houma's major streets. Some favorites include 1921 Seafood and Oyster Bar, a go-to for massive platters of oysters and fresh-caught seafood boils, and Abear's Cafe. This family-owned joint has served Cajun comfort foods like gumbo and fried catfish since 1963. Lumiere Blues and Jazz Bistro is another option, where patrons can dine on comfort food and cocktails while listening to local musicians. Nearby, the Bonvillain Civic Center hosts concerts, holiday festivals and craft shows. After hurricane events, the center becomes a shelter for the community. Going west on Tunnel Boulevard, which became Martin Luther King Boulevard, there are shopping centers, small businesses, chain restaurants, and grocery stores like Walmart and Publix. There are also big box stores like Sam's Club and Target here. Southland Mall offers department stores, retail shops, and a movie theater on Park Avenue.
Commuting from South Side
South Side is close to two major thoroughfares, Barrow Street and West Tunnel Boulevard. These roads connect to Highway 90 and nearby Interstates 10, 49 and 55 in New Orleans and Lafayette, which are about 60 and 100 miles away, respectively. Terrebonne Parish operates the Good Earth Transit bus system, with fixed routes connecting Houma to Thibodaux, 17 miles away, and surrounding bayou towns. Terrebonne General Hospital is next door in downtown Houma. The closest regional airport is Houma-Terrebonne Airport, about 6 miles from the community. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is 45 miles away. South Side has a CAP Index Crime Score of five out of 10, slightly over the national figure of four.
