The Lakes
Neighborhood in Houma, Louisiana
Terrebonne Parish 70360
Modern homes with limited availability
Sidewalks line the wide grassy lawns that sit beyond the gates. Driveways branch off the roads, leading to garages hidden in the back of the home. Acadian-inspired architecture and new traditional houses with sloping roofs and brick exteriors fill the neighborhood. “It’s three streets, and each street seems to get bigger,” Theriot says. “But they’re all beautiful.” Homes are rarely available in The Lakes. In 2024, the only property sold was a three-bedroom for $375,000. The homeowners association has a monthly fee of $50 that covers neighborhood, pool and clubhouse maintenance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says there is a relatively high risk of hurricanes and a relatively moderate risk of flooding. However, only the most southern properties are in a Special Flood Hazard Area. Flood insurance is recommended for anyone living in that area and is required for most mortgage lenders.Private amenities and parish park
One of the benefits of living in The Lakes is the private recreational area at the end of Lake Mechant Court. Kids can run around the playground or splash around the pool. There is also a tennis court, basketball court and sandy baseball field, as well as a clubhouse that community members can rent. Residences sit next to the Bayou Country Sports Park, an expansive park managed by the parish. True to its name, the park has several athletic fields, including five baseball fields, five softball fields and eight soccer fields. Several ponds are regularly stocked with fish – some get catfish in the spring and fall and rainbow trout in January, while others get bass. Canoes, kayaks and nonmotorized boats are frequently found on the water. Park visitors can cool off at the splash pad and take a break from the Louisiana heat. The pad is up and running from Memorial Day to Labor Day every year, although it can open weeks earlier and close weeks later if the weather allows.Louisiana high schools offer TOPS
The Lakes is part of the Terrebonne Parish School District. Students can start at Southdown Elementary School, which Niche gives a B-minus, before attending Houma Junior High School, which receives a B-plus. Terrebonne High School earns an A-minus and has several clubs that students can join, including service-based organizations like Beta Club and Key Club. Private schools are another option for Houma residents. Many of these private schools are Catholic, including Maria Immacolata School and Vandebilt Catholic High School.High school graduates are eligible for the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS), a merit-based scholarship program for Louisiana colleges and universities. Nicholls State University, about 15 miles away, is one of the participating schools. It offers 28 undergraduate degree programs, including nursing and culinary arts.
The Lakes residents attend city events
Houma boasts a full calendar of events. The Bayou Country Sports Park hosts The Good Earth 4th of July Festival every year. Attendees spend an entire night listening to live music, chatting with friends and chowing down on local food before setting up camp in the park’s fields to watch a colorful fireworks display. Another annual event that many residents look forward to is the Maw Maw Walker. The streets of Downtown are filled with people dressed in their silliest “Maw Maw” and “Paw Paw” costumes, strolling from restaurants to pubs. The day ends with a concert at the historic Courthouse Bandstand.U.S. Route 90 leads to New Orleans
The Lakes is a car-dependent community along State Route 311, which locals call Highway 311. The road connects with U.S. Route 90, so commuters can reach nearby cities without driving through town. “You hit Highway 90 and go left to Morgan City or Lafayette, or go right to New Orleans,” Theriot says. New Orleans is about 60 miles away. Most people fly out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, 47 miles away. The nearest hospital is Terrebonne General Health System, about 7 miles away.Homes near busy commercial area
The community is about 3 miles from Martin Luther King Boulevard, a bustling street lined with nationally recognized shops like Target, Hobby Lobby and Lowe’s that sit next to eateries such as Panda Express and Olive Garden. Locals can get their groceries from Aldi or travel into town for Rouses Market. While many of these businesses are well-known chains, residents of The Lakes are not far from some of the city’s most popular independently owned restaurants. Theriot says that a lot of people visit Cajun Critters when they are craving seafood, or they can head across town to The Shack. There are even more options in Downtown Houma, about 5 miles away. Lumiere Blues & Jazz Bistro has live music on Thursday nights and during Sunday brunch. After dinner, folks can get dessert at Scarlet Scoop Ice Cream Parlor, which features a rotating menu of unique flavors like caramel apple pecan pie and Gentilly cake.
