Miles of green space outside of the Energy Corridor

In Houston, when it rains, it pours, and the city’s characteristic storms gave Addicks-Park Ten a new beginning and an ongoing legacy as a region packed with natural beauty and man-made reservoirs. The community started as a railroad stop in Bear Creek but was destroyed in the 1900 Galveston hurricane. The original community was rebuilt alongside the Addicks Reservoir, which has since become one of the most important pieces of Houston’s flood infrastructure. The historic reservoir is built inside one of the city’s largest parks, which serves as the main centerpiece of the Addicks-Park Ten neighborhood. While the north side of the park is desirable for its luxury subdivisions, the western and southern parts of the neighborhood are sought after for their proximity to the Energy Corridor, one of the largest energy-sector employment hubs in Houston.

Thousands of acres of park space surround Addicks Reservoir

Over 2,000 acres of Addicks-Park Ten is taken up by the Addicks Reservoir and Bear Creek Pioneers Park. "The great thing about Addicks is the massive park," says Alan Bernstein, director of public affairs and communications for the Spring Branch Management District. "We actually developed a 22-mile hike and bike trail that connects the Addicks Reservoir with the White Oak Trails of East.” Addicks Reservoir is a key part of Houston’s flooding infrastructure and prevents the Cypress Creek watershed Buffalo Bayou from overflowing during heavy storms. Bear Creek Pioneers Park is a long-standing community staple offering 60 sports facilities and playgrounds, equestrian trails, and a mini zoo. The park was closed for repairs in May 2024, but visitors can still access the connected Congressman Bill Archer Dog Park on Groschke Road and Cullen Park on Saums Road.

Energy, medical and retail industry lines Katy Freeway

The south side of Addicks Reservoir along the Katy Freeway is occupied not only by the Energy Corridor, but also by transportation businesses, hotels and medical offices, including Houston Methodist West Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. “You get a lot of professionals who work for the oil companies because it’s so convenient, but you also have educators and people in the medical field because Katy is starting its own medical center, so it’s convenient for people to get there,” says Thalia Guderyon, a Realtor with Compass RE Texas who has over 20 years of experience selling homes in Houston. This industrial area is also home to Addicks United Methodist Church on Park Row Drive, one of the oldest churches in the area that was first established in 1879.

Westgate Marketplace and Greentree Shopping Center on the Katy Freeway are the main retail centers in the industrial portion of the neighborhood. These shopping centers mainly have big box stores like H-E-B, Target and Sam’s Club, as well as several popular casual restaurants. Christian’s Tailgate Bar and Grill on Highway 6 is known for its “super-sized” burgers, Kimchi’s Korean Café on Katy Freeway serves a modern take on classic Korean dishes, and Three Leaf Nepalese Indian Cuisine on Barker Cypress Road marries Indian and European flavors. Other casual restaurants, like Julia’s Mexican on Highway 6, can be found on the north side of the neighborhood.
