Alief is a multicultural shopping hub on Houston’s west side

Alief is an ethnically diverse Houston suburb where over 90 languages are spoken. Most shopping centers and locally owned eateries are on the north side along Bellaire Boulevard, while homes and apartment complexes can be found within Alief's many subdivisions. The neighborhood celebrates its heritage through public murals, community programs and an international parade that’s held every spring. With its own school district, public transportation and a low cost of living, Alief offers convenience and cultural enrichment in Harris County.

Many single-family homes were built in the 1970s and 80s. Traditional homes are common, as well as some contemporary, ranch-style and split-level houses. More than 130,000 people live here, and more than half of them rent. Sidewalks run throughout the community, and some custom homes are being built in Mai Garden Terrace. Homes tend to sell between the lower $100,000s and the lower $400,000s, with some larger outliers can sell into the mid-$700,000s.

Globally inspired shopping options within the International District

Several shopping centers can be found within Alief’s International District, including Hong Kong City Mall, which is home to over 100 small businesses. More shopping options are in nearby Chinatown and Sugar Land. “It’s the convenience of shopping, markets and a lot of other city services,” says Mark Wong, a local real estate agent with Texas United Realty. “You don’t have to go really far from one thing to the next. You can make one trip there and get everything done.” There are a few medical and dental offices northeast by Sam Houston Tollway, including the 24-hour West Chase Houston Hospital.

Cajun, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine

Hong Kong City Mall is primarily anchored by the Hong Kong Food Market, an Asian grocery store that offers fresh seafood, produce and baked goods. The mall also has Shabu Zone buffet, Viet Street Drinks & Snacks and Ocean Palace Chinese Seafood & Dim Sum Restaurant. Supermarket chains include Walmart and H-E-B, and there are a handful of fast-food restaurants such as Whataburger, McDonald’s and Chik-fil-A. There are plenty of Cajun restaurants, pho kitchens and bubble tea shops in Little Saigon, plus there are a few Vietnamese, African and Mexican food markets along Beechnut Street. “It has so much business booming – especially the restaurant industry,” Mark says. “It’s pretty much like a melting pot.”

Two highways and METRO buses to Downtown Houston

Alief is bordered by Interstate 69 and Westpark Tollway, both of which lead about 17 miles northeast toward Downtown Houston. METRO buses stop along Wilcrest Drive and take passengers to the Downtown Transit Center, with additional routes connecting residents to the William P. Hobby Airport. Bissonnet Street has historically dealt with major traffic congestion, but a new $35.9-million street-widening project aims to resolve those issues by 2028, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Can sometimes be very hectic. Is a very diverse neighborhood, although, despite the constant noise, it is a very nice place.

It has a great diversity of food and drinks. Restaurants are everywhere you see. The foods are amazing and affordable. There are also many bizarre dishes people need to try. I do not really go to night clubs so I do not know about those.
