Alief is a multicultural shopping hub on Houston’s west side
Alief is a Houston suburb where over 90 languages are spoken. The neighborhood celebrates its heritage through public murals, community programs and an international parade every spring. Most shopping centers and locally owned eateries are on the north side along Bellaire Boulevard, while homes and apartment complexes can be found within Alief's many subdivisions. With its own school district, public transportation and a low cost of living, Alief offers convenience and cultural enrichment in Harris County.
Alief residents take pride in their cultural heritage and local landmarks.

What kind of homes are in Alief, and what they cost
Many single-family homes were built in the 1970s and 80s. Traditional homes are common, as well as some contemporary, ranch-style and split-level houses. More than 130,000 people live here, and more than half of them rent. Sidewalks run throughout the community, and some custom homes are being built in Mai Garden Terrace. Homes tend to sell between the lower $100,000s and the lower $400,000s, with some larger outliers can sell into the mid-$700,000s.

Globally inspired shopping options within the International District
Several shopping centers can be found within Alief’s International District, including Hong Kong City Mall, which is home to over 100 small businesses. More shopping options are in nearby Chinatown and Sugar Land. “It’s the convenience of shopping, markets and a lot of other city services,” says Mark Wong, a local real estate agent with Texas United Realty. “You don’t have to go really far from one thing to the next. You can make one trip there and get everything done.” There are a few medical and dental offices northeast by Sam Houston Tollway, including the 24-hour West Chase Houston Hospital.
Alief's international markets feature all kinds of seafood, fresh produce and baked goods.

Cajun, Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine
Hong Kong City Mall is primarily anchored by the Hong Kong Food Market, an Asian grocery store that offers fresh seafood, produce and baked goods. The mall also has Shabu Zone buffet, Viet Street Drinks & Snacks and Ocean Palace Chinese Seafood & Dim Sum Restaurant. Supermarket chains include Walmart and H-E-B, and there are a handful of fast-food restaurants such as Whataburger, McDonald’s and Chik-fil-A. There are plenty of Cajun restaurants, pho kitchens and bubble tea shops in Little Saigon, plus there are a few Vietnamese, African and Mexican food markets along Beechnut Street. “It has so much business booming – especially the restaurant industry,” Mark says. “It’s pretty much like a melting pot.”
Alief is a diverse and vibrant suburb in southwest Houston.

Schools of choice for public, private and charter education
Students are served by the Alief Independent School District and can apply to its Schools of Choice program. The district has more than 40 schools that offer electives including STEM, visual and performing arts and dual language. It is also home to two Magnet schools, Kerr High and Alief Early College High, the latter of which offers college credit in partnership with Houston Community College. The Young Women's Leadership School will open in fall 2026 and serve girls in grades sixth through 12th grade. There’s also a handful of charter, private and religious-based institutions around the area, including King’s Academy, Van Houston Academy and Harmony Public Schools.
Elsik High School is an educational cornerstone of the community.

Two highways and METRO buses to Downtown Houston
Alief is bordered by Interstate 69 and Westpark Tollway, both of which lead about 17 miles northeast toward Downtown Houston. METRO buses stop along Wilcrest Drive and take passengers to the Downtown Transit Center, with additional routes connecting residents to the William P. Hobby Airport. Bissonnet Street has historically dealt with major traffic congestion, but a new $35.9-million street-widening project aims to resolve those issues by 2028, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Community parks, sports fields and meditative spaces
There are many parks and recreational facilities close to the area. Arthur Storey Park is a 175-acre green space on the east side of the neighborhood with two lakes, a playground and a Tai Chi court, while Boone Road Park has walking trails around its soccer and baseball fields. Children also like to play at Alief Community Center's 35-acre park. “The community park was recently renovated two or three years ago,” Mark says. “A lot of people hang out there at the swimming pool, tennis courts or library.”
Alief Community Center is a welcoming gathering space for residents of all ages.
Alief's diverse population contributes to a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere.

There are numerous businesses in the area that carry great merchandise but because there is so much theft and robberies going on they minimize when and how many people with their kids can come in at a time because they cannot monitor a large crowd of customers.

My overall experience with Alief is that the neighborhood that I currently live in, is a good residents. However, I know that doesn't mean that every neighborhood in Alief is a safe place as I know that some things can be change for the betterment of the community.

I love the public elementary schools in Alief. It is a good school district. There are plenty of parks in the area and lots to do. There is not too much night life in Alief, but there is a short drive away.

What I like about Alief is that the schools provide a lot for the students to take advantage of. There is also giving a lot to the community because the youth do community service such as cleaning and local businesses provide free necessities such as food. A change I would like to see is more security at night and early in the morning when high school students wait for their school bus to come and pick them up.
