Just outside Houston is the compact enclave of Cloverleaf, a borough with railroad roots that, over time, morphed into a community with its own footprint. Cloverleaf originated as a station along the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway, which as far back as 1936 still didn’t have an official name. Today, it’s census-designated with a host of homes, businesses and schools situated in a grid network. Many homes date back to the mid-20th century, and anyone who moves into the area will most likely meet residents who have been there for years. With green spaces woven into the area, nearby schools and 13 miles from downtown Houston, Cloverleaf is a neighborhood of convenience with a long-established history.
Cloverleaf

Homes
Most housing in Cloverleaf was built in the mid-20th century, and midcentury ranch homes and brick bungalows are extremely common. The neatly patterned neighborhood means nearly every property has a small – yet equally sized – lot of land. Though many homes have a bit of age, there’s an evident care for maintenance amongst homeowners, and some contemporary properties have been constructed when empty lots have opened up. Three-bedroom ranch homes sell between $230,000 and $270,000, while newer or renovated homes can sell between $280,000 and $310,000.
Transportation
Wallisville Road offers quick access to Route 90 toward Houston, which is just under 15 miles away from Cloverleaf. Considering the interlocked sidewalks from the residential streets, the neighborhood is relatively walkable and bikeable. However, there is a noticeable lack of public transportation, and most residents are car-dependent.
Shopping and Dining
A Walmart Supercenter is situated in the northeast corner of Cloverleaf, right off Wallisville Road. Across Wallisville Road is the New Forest Crossing shopping center, which includes stores such as Big Lots, PetSmart and Five Below. The local taco food trucks are among the favorite spots to grab a bite in Cloverleaf, and multiple can be found along Freeport Street. Nuevo Leon Meat Market has been praised for having the best barbacoa in town, while Refresqueria Tropical down the street is known for its snow cones.
Parks
North Shore Rotary Park, found on Force Street near the center of the neighborhood, is a well-known green space for kids to go to the playground while others dribble at the basketball court or walk their dogs. The Leon Z Grayson Community Center is located on the western edge of Cloverleaf off Freeport Street and is known for its various events and programs. It’s a reliable resource for community support, such as drive-thru food distribution and flu shot clinics.
Schools
The Cloverleaf community is zoned for schools in the Galena Park Independent School District. The district carries an A rating from the Texas Education Agency for its students’ academic growth. Many kids in Cloverleaf will start at James B. Harvard Elementary, which has an overall B-minus on Niche and above-average ratings when it comes to student progress. Students can move on to Cobb Sixth Grade Campus and North Shore Middle, also with B-minus rankings, before finishing basic education at North Shore Senior High School. With an overall B-plus, North Shore is home to a football program that has won multiple state championships.
Events
One of the major annual events in the Cloverleaf area is the North Shore Rotary Club’s fish fry and crawfish boil. The event, held at Rotary Pavilion off Wallisville Road each May, can draw some 5,000 people in a single day and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships and other community organizations.
