East Downtown
Saint Emanuel Street pops with eateries and bars
A smiling sun greets locals on EaDo's Saint Emanuel Street, as do other flavors of wall art. On the other side of Interstate 69, neighbors stroll the street's narrow sidewalks under reedy willow oaks while popping in and out of all the local bars, clubs and restaurants. A new dance club as of 2022, Mala Vida pops with bright pink walls and neon signage, bringing in a whirl of energy. Rodeo Goat has a wide selection of craft cocktails and customized patties, including a whisky burger. Hanging a left onto Lamar Street, locals also visit Truck Yard, a popular indoor/outdoor bar with a Ferris wheel in its backyard. Shops are limited here, but there are a few small boutiques, like the Texas Art Asylum on Live Oaks Houston — a thrift store that also sells art supplies.EaDog Park connects to the Houston bike trail system
Locals can walk south from Truck Yard to the Houston International Promenade, home to EaDog Park, Giant Beatles Statues and the We Love Houston sign. The greenway ends by Shell Energy Stadium, where the Houston Dynamo soccer team plays. It's also part of the Houston bike trail system. "The trail is super convenient. It helps people get to and from work safely without worrying about coordinating their schedule with the metro rail or paying for parking," Nichols says. While green space is thin just steps from home, locals can hop on Interstate 45 and be at Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park in 4 to 7 miles. The former is known for its art structures, including a dandelion fountain. The latter is 1,500 acres, complete with trails and a passive pond. Many of EaDo's homes are repurposed warehouses
When EaDo became a warehouse district, some of the widely spaced pre-war national cottages and Craftsmans were torn down to make room for factories. Now, those factories are being turned into lofts. And where empty lots used to be, detached three-story townhomes now exist with highly modern finishes — most ranging from $400,000 to $450,000. Craftsmans with original brick pillars and stone foundations still exist in the eastern section of EaDo. A fixer-upper on Leeland Street went for around $200,000. "Most properties will be under contract within 60 to 90 days," Nichols shares.High School for Law and Justice
Houston Independent School District serves EaDo. Among the area's nearby schools, students may attend Lantrip Elementary School, Yolanda Black Navarro Middle School and High School for Law and Justice. The elementary earns a C rating from Niche, the middle school scores a C minus and the high school maintains an impressive A minus. The high school offers a dual credit program, allowing students to get ahead on their college plans.Live music at House of Blues Restaurant & Bar
There's plenty to do in EaDo, from clubs to sports venues and live music at places like the House of Blues Restaurant & Bar on Caroline Street. Graffiti Park on Leeland Street is also known as a popular selfie backdrop as every inch is covered in wall art – from portraits of locals to astronauts and wild cats. With attractions like the Houston Museum District being just 2 miles southwest, it's easy to head out. The district is full of art exhibits, of course, but it also houses the Houston Zoo, The Houston Museum of Natural Science and much more.Catch the MetroRail in EaDo
MetroRail passes through EaDo, connects locals to the highlights of Houston, and has bus routes throughout the area. Otherwise, there's always Uber, personal vehicles, and, of course, traveling on foot. William P. Hobby Airport is 9 miles from home along I-45, and HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center is 3 miles away on Hermann Drive. Local also hop on Interstate 69 to get to the grocery store H-E-B in 5 miles.
