Edgebrook
Recovering after Hurricane Harvey
Edgebrook is in the Sims Bayou watershed and suffered severe flood damage during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The community was again impacted after a massive winter storm hit Houston in 2018. Julie Keels, an Edgebrook resident and former representative on the Houston City Council, says she saw her community begin to struggle greatly after the storms. Because of the severity of its past flood damage and vulnerability to future weather hazards, the Houston Mayor’s office selected Edgebrook for a Neighborhood Resilience Plan in 2020. The Plan encourages ways to reduce flooding and address vulnerability to climate hazards, including adding new retention ponds and flood protections and encouraging individual flood insurance. “Our neighborhood is flooded almost every year,” says Ray Soto, an Edgebrook resident and a council representative for Houston's District E. “But we just had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new 66-acre retention pond, which is supposed to help with flooding, and we’ve gotten a good test of it with our recent storms. It’s bouncing back very slowly, but that’s just how the gears turn.”Edgebrook homes are rebuilding after floods
Many of Edgebrook’s older ranch homes and cottages from the 1950s were damaged during Hurricane Harvey. “A lot of the houses had to be gutted, didn’t have insurance, and they remained unoccupied. We had four feet of water in some homes,” Soto says. “I think we’ll always have to fight for maintenance and infrastructure repairs because the houses are older.” In 2022, new multilevel Craftsman-style houses joined the remodeled older properties. The entire neighborhood is built in neat, tight blocks, flanked by gridded sidewalks. Older ranch homes sell for $150,000 to $300,000, while newly built homes go for around $300,000 to $400,000. Edgebrook has a CAP Index Crime Score of 5, slightly above the national average score of 4.Next to Interstate 45 and William P. Hobby Airport
The west side of Edgebrook is shaped by I-45, which runs into the heart of downtown Houston, 13 miles away. For residents who prefer to travel on the Ride METRO bus system, there are multiple stops on local roads like Fuqua Street, Seaford Drive and Sabo Road. Edgebrook is less than 5 miles away from William P. Hobby Airport, one of Houston’s two commercial international airports, which can cause noise pollution from overhead planes.Freeway Manor Park received a $1 million makeover
Wilson Memorial Park on Gilpin Street is the largest of the community’s two parks. It is a favorite gathering spot among Edgebrook residents for its tennis courts, sports fields and pool. Saint Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, one of the area’s largest churches, is on North Broadway, a short walk away from the park. The smaller Freeway Manor Park on Theta Street underwent a $1 million construction project in 2023 that added a soccer mini-pitch and gave its walking trails and baseball fields a fresh look.Dozens of taco trucks line Edgebrook Drive
Edgebrook is the right place to have a craving for Mexican food. Edgebrook Drive is packed with both sit-down taquerias and food trucks, and every business has a different twist on tacos, fajitas and quesadillas. Taqueria La Jalicience and Camelia are two of the highest-rated restaurants on the street, while El Borrego Taqueria and El Jalapeno are popular open-late food trucks.Almeda Mall and Fuqua Shopping Center, large shopping centers along I-45, are both less than 5 miles away. These malls are mainly occupied by car dealerships, but also have some large anchor stores, including a Sam’s Club and Walmart for groceries and household supplies.
Plan for college or a career at Pasadena Memorial High
Some of the Pasadena Independent School District schools that Edgebrook students may attend are Garfield Elementary School and Milstead Middle School, which both have C-plus grades on Niche, and V. W. Miller Intermediate School, which has a B grade. Well-performing Pasadena Memorial High School has an A-minus grade. It offers the “Maverick U” College and Career Center, staffed with advisors who can help students plan a path to college, a career or the military. Edgebrook is about 6 miles from both San Jacinto College South and San Jacinto College Central.
