Fondren Gardens
Fondren Garden homes are nearly a century old
As one of Houston’s older neighborhoods, Fondren Gardens is mainly filled with cottages and brick ranch homes dating back to the 1930s and 1950s. A few new properties -- mainly modern duplexes -- have been built as recently as 2023. All these residences have small lawns, which owners decorate with vibrant gardens or small, young trees for a bit of shade. The neighborhood’s ranch homes typically sell for $150,000 to $300,000, while a brand-new duplex can cost as much as $600,000. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 5, slightly above the national average score of 4. “I’ll be the first to say we are probably No. 3 in people making 311 calls here, but it’s a testament to community leaders who really care about the community that people call in things that can be dangerous,” says Robin Allen, president of the Heathercrest Post Oak Village Civic Association who has lived in the area since 1989.Small restaurants and markets line Sam Houston Parkway
Most of Fondren Gardens' food options are fast food and chains, with a few small local restaurants. ReMo’s Café on Sam Houston Parkway specializes in soul food and barbecue and has a storefront next to Home Cut Donuts, a no-frills bakery. Hartz Chicken Buffet serves crispy fried chicken and fish in an all-you-can-eat setup. There are not many large retail centers close to Fondren Gardens, so small markets like Haviland Grocery on Haviland Street and chains like Joe V’s Smart Shop on Fuqua Street or Fiesta Mart on Independence Boulevard provide locals with most of their daily needs. “My only complaint is we need more shops to do business here and give us a chance,” Allen says. “They call it a food desert out here. We need something like an H-E-B out here. We need some dine-in restaurants. I want to see investors invest in it.”
Houston student-athletes play at Butler Sports Complex
Students in Fondren Gardens can attend school through the Houston Independent School District. Local schools like Fondren Elementary School, Welch Middle School and James Madison High School all earn C grades on Niche. Fondren Gardens is adjacent to the Joe K. Butler Sports Complex on South Main Street, a multi-purpose facility that is used by many local middle and high schools. The sports complex has a football stadium, fieldhouse, and baseball and softball fields all in one place. Fondren Gardens is less than 5 miles away from the Houston Community College Stafford campus.Soccer practice awaits at Blue Ridge Park
About half of Fondren Gardens is covered by part of the 296-acre Blue Ridge Park at the intersection of Orem Drive and Hillcroft Avenue, which serves as a youth soccer training complex. The Fountain of Praise, one of the largest churches in the area, neighbors these practice fields. Blue Ridge connects to the smaller South Main Estates Park on Zavalla Street, which features a playground and walking trail. Fondren Gardens also borders Buffalo Run Park on Buffalo Run, a large park surrounding four lakes. An observation tower, a boat lunch and fishing piers offer multiple ways to enjoy the water.A triangle formed by four major Houston highways
