Greater Hobby Area
An established area that’s still evolving
Most of the houses in this area were built between the 1940s and the 1980s, a mix of ranch-style homes. Many of them have stout brick facades. But the Greater Hobby Area also has a fair amount of new construction in spots. Options new and old here come with price tags that usually fall between the $200,000s and the $300,000s. “There are definitely affordable living spaces. It’s a great place to start if you want to not be far from everything,” says Spruel, who was a 2023 winner of Connect Realty’s President’s Club Award, given to top producers.Another common denominator in the Greater Hobby Area is lawn space — lots here generally range from one-tenth of an acre to almost a full acre. Properties line narrow, tranquil residential streets. Greater Hobby Area is made up mostly of single-family homes, but there are also a handful of condos and townhomes in the neighborhood, which sell for prices from just under $100,000 to the mid $100,000s.
Trains, planes and automobiles
The airport here is what gives the neighborhood its name. Hobby was the 26th governor of Texas, in the early 20th century. The William P. Hobby Airport serves millions of passengers each year, with flights from Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines. The airport, in 2022, became the first in North America to achieve a five-star score in the Skytrax World Airport Star Rating. The Greater Hobby Area has multiple stops in the city’s METRO bus system, which has more than 100 routes around the city in total. Drivers in the area can take advantage of their proximity to Interstate 45, an artery that can take commuters up to Downtown Houston in a trip of just about a dozen miles.
There’s even a railroad that cuts by the Greater Hobby Area, helping to support a collection of industrial businesses on the west side of the neighborhood. Companies on that side of the neighborhood include BNSF Railway and Southeastern Freight Lines.
Amenities galore, all around
I-45 here parallels the Gulf Freeway, a bustling commercial thoroughfare. “There’s always shops and things to do,” Spruel says. “Stores, restaurants.” The list includes big box stores like Walmart Supercenter, Burlington, Floor and Decor, and Academy Sports + Outdoors. There are also some well-liked neighborhood haunts to grab a bite to eat, like Shuttle Burgers, popular in part for its prices. Taquería De Jalisco down the road is known for its menudo. And locals can grab a sweet treat at the ice cream parlor La Nieve Michoacána after a good meal.Outdoor fun is easily accessible
Residents can find multiple options for outdoor time nearby. Walter Jones Park is within walking distance for many, a roughly 13-acre space with a playground and plenty of open field space. The bigger, 361-acre El Franco Lee Park is right down the road, too. The park includes a whopping 10 soccer fields, five baseball fields, four softball fields and a pond that’s open to fishing.Local school options vary
Kids in the Greater Hobby Area can attend schools in either the Houston Independent School District or the Pasadena Independent School District, which both carry B ratings on Niche. Those on the west side of the neighborhood can go to HISD schools and the Pasadena ISD covers the east side. Students in the HISD zone can go to the B-rated DeAnda Elementary, whose list of extracurricular activities includes club sports. Then students can move on to the C-minus-rated Thomas Middle, whose fine arts instruction opportunities include band and dance. The area’s C-rated Sterling High offers career and technical education opportunities in topics ranging from architecture and construction to law and public service.Kids covered by the Pasadena ISD can go to Jessup Elementary for prekindergarten to fourth grade, whose speech therapist, Jill O’Keefe, was named the district’s speech therapist of the year for the 2023-24 school year. Then they can advance to the C-rated Rick Schneider Middle for grades 5 and 6, which has its own orchestra program. The C-plus-rated South Houston Intermediate covers grades 7 and 8 and its extracurricular opportunities include sports teams ranging from volleyball to football. South Houston High, which has a B-minus grade, offers a Naval JROTC program.
City events aren’t far away
The Greater Hobby Area’s convenient location means locals can easily access a multitude of annual city events. For instance, the H-E-B Children's Festival takes place downtown in March, full of hundreds of activities, including rides and crafts. The Wings Over Houston Airshow is another, an October tradition at Ellington Field that’s considered one of the top airshows in the country.
