Some families have lived in Harrisburg-Manchester for generations
One might think that living in a neighborhood with a strong industrial and manufacturing presence would be off-putting. But that’s not the case in the Harrisburg-Manchester neighborhood of Houston. Inventory stays low here and when homes do come up, days-on-market are on par with the national average, largely due to notably lower price tags and being 10 miles from downtown.
“It’s at the end of the gentrification on the east side. It has less appeal because of the industrial nature of it, but the advantage is you can get in there for a cheaper price,” says Carlos J. Martinez, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Premier Properties and longtime area resident. “It’s right off the Port of Houston. You have families there that have lived and worked in that area for generations. There’s not a whole lot of inventory because people there don’t want to leave. There’s just a lot of sentimental value because they’ve lived there forever.”
Harrisburg-Manchester offers vintage and modern homes
Homes in this East End neighborhood date back to the early 1900s. They're mostly ranch homes and shotgun cottages, but newer farmhouse-style and contemporary homes with two-car garages have been built in recent years. They have front porches and moderately sized front and rear yards.
The cost of real estate in Harrisburg-Manchester is a fraction of what's spent in a lot of other Houston neighborhoods. For people who work in the refineries or shipping channel, property here is much more affordable than areas that are transitioning away from their working-class roots.
The average sale price hovers around $200,000. A cozy two-bedroom, one-bath may sell for $150,000, while a three-bedroom, two-bath could fetch around $250,000.
Homes typically stay on the market for 43 days, compared to 41 nationwide. “Price plays a big factor in how quickly things sell,” Martinez says. “If it’s around the $100,000 price point, investors come in and snatch things up. People are looking for a deal always.”

Mexican flavor can be found on Broadway Street
A taste of Mexico can be found along Broadway Street at local favorites such as Taqueria Allende and El Mesquite. There’s no Tex-Mex served at these establishments, patrons can expect authentic south-of-the-border dishes and the likes of handmade tortillas and Mexican Coke. One regular of El Mesquite says the costillas en salsa verde (pork ribs in green sauce) are so delicious she dreams of them sometimes.
And when residents prefer a night-in with a home-cooked meal, a grocery run can be easily handled with a quick 3-mile trip west on Interstate 610 at the H-E-B on Woodbridge Road.
Currently, Harrisburg-Manchester might be riding on the coattails of adjacent neighborhoods, but that’s not a bad thing. Thanks to the city's hot real estate market, there are plenty of restaurants, stores and shops popping up in the East End. “The poets, artists, and musicians spearhead the initiatives to move into these neighborhoods because they’re cheaper, and from there, other people catch on. That’s what’s happened to East End,” Martinez says. “Laundry mats have been turned into bars. There are a lot of breweries around there.”

Enjoy the outdoors at Brays Greenway Park
Harrisburg-Manchester is nearly surrounded by Brays Bayou, Buffalo Bayou and Sims Bayou. While picturesque, the waterways don’t meet the state’s water quality standards for bacteria levels and pollutants. Recreational activities such as fishing and swimming aren’t advised, but kayaking and canoeing are popular pastimes here.
Brays Greenway Park, on Hockley Street, is the go-to spot for joggers, bikers, and dog walkers alike. The 14-mile Brays Bayou Greenway Trail, a paved trail that runs along Brays Bayou, cuts through the park.
