Hunterwood offers suburban and industrial vibes on the east side of Greater Houston
Hunterwood is a small neighborhood 12 miles outside of downtown Houston serving as a suburban bedroom community as well as a hub for energy production. Neighboring NRG Energy's Greens Bayou Generating Station, Hunterwood serves as a suitable landing spot for industrial workers. "There are a lot of plants out in that area. If you go further east, you've got ExxonMobil, Shell, there are a lot of energy and chemical plants," says local Realtor Sara Loftin of LPT Realty, who has sold dozens of homes around Greater Houston, including one in Hunterwood. Loftin also notes that Hunterwood's affordability and central location make it a popular destination for homebuyers.
The NRG Greens Bayou Plant is located just west of Hunterwood.
NRG is the second largest power producer in Texas, with a plant located adjacent to Hunterwood.

Hunterwood offers good access to major thoroughfares
Hunterwood is not walkable and doesn't offer public transportation options, but does benefit from solid access to major roads and highways. Route 90 runs directly through Hunterwood and leads to Beltway 8, which circles the Greater Houston area. Those working in the city can get downtown within 20 minutes by traveling west on Route 90 and merging onto Interstate 10. Traffic can be heavy, though.
Hunterwood is home to about 5,600 full time residents.

The Shops at Stone Park is the region's premier shopping destination
Hunterwood is several miles from the nearest grocery stores. Joe V's Smart Shop and its adjacent Food Town on Wallisville Road are the top spots for grocery runs, while big-box retailers from Best Buy to JCPenney can be found at The Shops at Stone Park. National chain eateries line Wallisville Road and Beltway 8, but locally owned restaurants steal the show. El Trompo Loco is acclaimed for its Mexican fare, while Bibo's Cafe offers Vietnamese staples.

Gene Green Park is the area's recreational hub
Hunterwood doesn't contain any community parks, though Gene Green Park is just a 4-mile drive east of the neighborhood. The park's splash pad is a hot spot for kids to cool off during Houston's brutal summers, while its skatepark is the place to go for skateboarders to show off their skills. Gene Green's dog park is another major attraction for pet owners all over town. Jim and Joann Fonteno Family Park is another premier destination for its looped path amid its 33 acres of wooded terrain.

Homes in Hunterwood Village and Pine Tree come in various shapes and sizes
Homes in Hunterwood are contained within the neighborhood's two primary subdivisions — Hunterwood Village and Pine Tree. Hunterwood Village mainly features established ranch-style homes constructed in the 1980s, while Pine Tree offers larger New Traditional-style properties with brick facades. Apartments and townhouses can also be found at Lake Houston Pines off Lake Houston Parkway. Homes usually price between $200,000 and $300,000. According to Toni Hite, a Sales Associate for Coldwell Banker Realty, newer builds in the nearby unincorporated community of Sheldon have also attracted homebuyers to the area.

Hunterwood students are served by the Galena Park Independent School District. Kids may go to Tice Elementary School before advancing to Cobb Sixth Grade Campus and Cunningham Middle School. Each school earns overall grades of B-minus from Niche, while North Shore Senior High School has a B-plus Niche grade and offers a competitive athletics program that has produced numerous NFL players.
