Jersey Village has a suburban sense of community
Don’t mistake this suburban city for a spot in Jersey. Jersey Village is pure Texas — named after the Jersey cattle that were once raised here. Initially cow pastures and farmland, Jersey Village is now known for its small-town ambiance, dining and retail options and convenient location to Houston. “It truly has a village feel, so the name Jersey Village is not lost. It’s a close-knit community of friendly folks,” says Realtor Kristen Manz, team leader of the Living Greater Houston Team brokered by EXP Realty. She's been selling homes in the area for 10 years. “In the fall you can find the community enjoying Friday night lights and cheering on their local high school football team. It doesn’t matter how good the football team is, people show up. People really rally around local high school sports, especially football.”
A variety of home styles in Jersey Village
Homebuyers will find everything from Tudor to Mediterranean-style residences built from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Giant oaks extend over well-maintained yards, providing ample shade from the Texas sun. Narrow sidewalks and streetlights typically line the residential streets. “The houses in Jersey Village tend to be built on larger lots because they were built earlier on. So, you get more house and more land for the money,” says Cesar Calderon, a Realtor with Texas Ally Real Estate, who's been selling homes in the area for four years. “Also, because of the age of the homes, the houses do have more personality. You can find homes in all styles there.” Smaller three-bedroom properties sell between $350,000 and $450,000, while larger homes with five bedrooms range from $600,000 to $800,000. Jersey Village continues to grapple with floods but prioritizes reducing the issue by investing $25 million in street and drainage reconstruction. “The vast majority of properties have minimal risk of flooding,” Calderon says.

Public school students here may attend Elementary, Cook Middle and Jersey Village High. These schools are part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (ISD) and earn B-plus, A-minus and A Niche scores, respectively. Beyond football, Jersey Village High offers a variety of clubs including water polo. “The schools are really good relative to the rest of Houston,” Calderon says.

U.S. Route 290 leads to Houston
Jersey Village is bordered by U.S. Route 290, the main highway between Houston and Austin. Those who work in Houston’s Central Business District have an 18-mile drive east. “Its location is very convenient with easy access to major highways,” Calderon says. “You could get to downtown in 20 minutes.” The George Bush Intercontinental Airport is 22 miles northeast. HCA Houston Health North Cypress, a 163-bed hospital, is on Northwest Freeway. “Everybody drives here. We like our fuel,” Manz jokes.
Fishing, hiking and golf at Jersey Meadow Park
Clark Henry Park, on Equador Street, has a pool and a splash pad and is the site of regular events. The Concerts in the Park series offers live music during the summer; Doggy Dip Day welcomes pets to the pool in September and Founders Day in April transforms the park into a fairground with rides and fireworks. Jersey Meadow Park, on Rio Grande Drive, offers a lake for fishing, a mile-long gravel walking path and the Jersey Village Dog Park. Next door, the public Jersey Meadow Golf Couse has an 18-hole course, a pro shop and a bar and grill. Carol Fox Park, off Jersey Drive, features a giant sandbox and an updated playground.

Along Farm to Market 1960 Road West, there are plenty of well-known stores like Kohl’s, Walmart Supercenter and Kroger. “There are all the familiar chains you would expect in the suburbs peppered with mom-and-pops,” Manz says. Adriatic Café Italian Grill and Los Cucos Mexican Café are two popular spots in the Northwest Village shopping center for dining out. Senate Avenue Brewing Company, on Dillard Drive, is a hangout for craft beer, trivia nights and live music.
