Memorial Park hosts a 15,000 acre park

Memorial Park is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Houston, and with good reason. The striking homes here emit European flair, and its namesake 15,000-acre park is the Platonic Ideal of a city park. From a public swimming pool and mountainous hiking paths to public art and a golf course, it’s understandable why homes next to this giant urban green space are priced higher than others in the vicinity.

The market is doubly competitive because the only homes in this neighborhood occupy a smattering of blocks on the northeast edge of the park. “If you’re going to be in the city but you want that more rural feel of being in the country that’s the place to be,” says Lisa Peltier, a Realtor with Nan & Company, who’s been selling homes in the area for eight years. “There are 100-year-old trees all over Memorial Park.”

Memorial Park homes offer international style

There’s a block of new townhouses on Blossom Street in Memorial Park that illustrate the pinnacle of contemporary urban architecture. Inspired by London’s Kensington Hotel, these palatial residences combine the best of the old with the new. French windows open onto Venetian balconies, and boxed eaves give the clean white facades the impression of a Neapolitan townhouse. But inside, the design and amenities are anything but antique.

Additionally, there are beautiful mansions built in the Monterey Revival style with ornate moldings and tiled patios. Massive Spanish Colonials with arched window walls and red clay tile roofs occupy precious half-acres behind steel gates. Townhouses with two stories of balconies accessed by French windows and ornate columns further contribute to the European feel of the neighborhood. “There is a hodgepodge of everything over there. There’s modern new construction and then there are older historic homes,” Peltier says. “Some of the lots are super small with almost no yard. Others are on an acre. It just depends on where you are.”

Homes typically sell for around $1 million. On the low end, homebuyers might find a two-bedroom townhome in the high-$500,000s, while mammoth estates top out at $1.4 million.

Pacific Coast Tacos and Canyon Bar and Grill are popular dining spots

There isn’t a lot beyond homes and greenery within these narrow neighborhood boundaries. However, Memorial Park offers quality over quantity with neighborhood favorites, like Pacific Coast Tacos, where locals can nosh on fish tacos and street corn slathered with mayo and cotija cheese. Canyon Bar and Grill, a funky, laid-back watering hole, allows residents to take their dogs out for a beer on the patio.

Stroll east of the neighborhood to find some of the hippest happening spots in Houston. From taking a yoga class at Urban Fit to checking out the paintings and sculptures at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, there’s something for everyone within blocks of the homes in Memorial Park. Although locals have to get in the car to buy groceries at the H-E-B that's 2 miles east.
