An established neighborhood with proximity to downtown Houston
North Shore is a heavily wooded neighborhood with miles of green space and equally abundant community comforts just 10 miles from downtown Houston. Though the neighborhood lacks robust shopping, residents can easily access everyday amenities, including a local Kroger for grocery runs. North Shore could be considered a solid investment zone as properties are relatively affordable, starting around $100,000 less than the Houston average. And although homes here skew older, they are often re-imagined. "People have been living there for a long time, and they want to upgrade a little," says Lizbeth Benavides of JLA Realty, a bilingual Realtor specializing in Houston markets who speaks both English and Spanish. Benavides describes the local community as caring and family-friendly. On the weekends, friends meet up at the soccer fields and dog park along the greenbelt. They can also explore a range of programming for all ages at the closest library, just outside the neighborhood.

Fast-casual chains line Interstate 10
"We have a lot of restaurants around the area but not necessarily shopping centers. There's a Sam's Club, Walmart and an Academy close by," Benavides says. Fast-casual chains line North Shore's southern boundary, Interstate 10, and its main thoroughfare of Maxey Road. Refresqueria Tropical, Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen and Saltgrass Steakhouse are just a few options. North Shore's small selection of local eateries are mostly small, unpretentious Salvadorian, Honduran and Mexican restaurants and a couple of food trucks. Ene's Mexican Restaurant on Maxey Road is family-owned and known for its homemade tortillas and quick service. There's a Kroger on Woodforest Boulevard on East Freeway for groceries and convenient shopping. Retail chains like Lowes and Best Buy line Beltway 8 along the neighborhood's eastern boundary. Mall shopping at The Galleria is 17 miles away or a 23-minute drive via Interstate 10.

Brick exterior homes available in North Shore
Ana Salazar, a Realtor with Nan Properties with 22 years of experience selling in Houston helped her parents find a home in North Shore. She describes the community as welcoming. "Their neighbor and his wife, for Christmas, came by with a wagon full of baskets with food. They had a little Christmas bell. It was super sweet." Most locals live in modest brick ranch-style's from the '70s, but the newest homes are split-level brick new traditionals from the mid 2000s. North Shores streetscapes have a rustic feeling with "pockets of luxury," as Pena puts it. Ranch-style homes in North Shore mostly range from the mid $100,000s to the upper $200,000s. Split levels generally price from the high $200,000s to around $400,000. “There aren’t a lot of new constructions. People are mostly focused on developing what’s already here,” Pena says. North Shore's CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, only slightly higher than the national average of 4 out. "It's pretty secure. When you call the police, it's not like other cities where they take hours to respond," Salazar says. She also adds that the neighborhood has not experienced any flooding issues like other parts of Houston.
North Shore is an established neighborhood and has many trees to keep homes cool in the heat.

"They have a pretty high-ranked football team, and they've gone to state several times," Salazar says about the high school's Northshore Mustangs. "So that has brought a lot of attention to the area." After school, the Jacinto City Branch Library on Akron Street provides a quiet place to study. Its Book Buddies program pairs volunteering teens with preschool kids to help them strengthen their reading skills. The library also hosts regular Little Readers Story Time for kids and offers ESL classes for adults.
