Steeped in history and modern community ties
When Pleasantville was developed in 1948, it was intended to be a safe place for veterans who could not find housing in other parts of Houston. When Interstates 10 and 610 were built in the 1950s, more factories came to the area. The north side of Pleasantville and next-door Port Houston continues to be filled with chemical manufacturing plants. This industrial boom has led Pleasantville to deal with some ongoing challenges, like high violent crime rates, air pollution, factory fires, and chemical runoff. “Pleasantville can speak to its historical high moments. The challenge today is surviving into the future and doing it in a cohesive manner,” says Bridgette Murray, a Pleasantville local and the founder of Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS). But these problems have not deterred those who call the community home. The active Pleasantville Civic League, Super Neighborhood Council chapter, Pleasantville Garden Club and Environmental Defense Fund all work to help the neighborhood clean, safe and filled with beautiful parks and clean air. “Growing up in Pleasantville, we are taught that being involved and caring for the community matters. It is just the way things are for us,” says Mary Fontenot, the president of the Pleasantville Historical Society.

Since I moved to this neighborhood a lot has changed. I used to live in Denver Harbor where hispanics like myself and my family lived but here in Pleasantville there are barely any hispanics.
