From quarries to community spaces in Howard

Just outside of Green Bay, the village of Howard offers an outdoorsy suburban alternative to the Packers city. The village used to be known for its quarries lining Duck Creek, but after the last one closed in 2002, the village started to turn into a more recreational destination. Home to just under 20,000 people, Howard’s growing housing market and new multi-purpose space highlight that Howard is still adapting and changing.

Howard's old quarry turned into a beach

Duck Creek Quarry Beach opened in 2015 after the city filled the quarry and added sand along the shoreline. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, residents can swim or kayak. The village prohibits motorized boats at the beach, but Green Bay's docks are not as restrictive. Pinewood Park Outdoor Rink offers year-round skating. In Howard’s cold, long winters, people can ice skate on the indoor and outdoor rinks.
In 2023, the city opened the Howard Commons Activity Complex, a multi-purpose recreational and social space with pickleball courts, an open-air pavillion and an amphitheater. The $5 million center also includes a beer garden featuring local brews and wines. Many of the spaces are flexible to accommodate different needs and seasons. Even in the winter, patrons can lounge in one of the beer garden's Biergloos, a clear plastic-covered dome that groups and families can rent for a a couple of hours. Well after the last freeze of the season, many flock back to the center to soak in the summertime splash pad or rollerskate.

Newer homes in Howard than Green Bay

Howard’s median housing price is a little under the national median but higher than Green Bay's. In addition to some historic properties, Howard’s housing market includes ranch-style homes built as early as the 1950s and new traditionals in subdivisions like Hazel Estates and Jewel Meadows. Many properties are spacious with lots spanning up to an acre. The Residences at Howard Commons is a newer apartment complex just steps from the activity complex.
The Howard Police Department maintains public safety for the community. Crime statistics for the area are not readily available.

AP and IB classes offered at Howard's schools

Howard is part of the Howard-Suamico School District, which earns an A-minus from Niche and ranks as the fifth-best school district for athletes in Wisconsin. Bay Port High School is the district’s only high school and offers both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. Niche gives the high school an A-minus rating.

Seasonal activities offered at Howard Commons Activity Center

The Duck Creek Triathlon goes through the village at the end of every June with swimming in the Duck Creek Quarry, a 13-mile bike ride in the village and a 5k run on the Mountain Bay Trail. On weekends from May to September, the Howard Commons center hosts concerts at amphitheater and brings in food trucks each week. Howard Commons Farmers Market is every Monday from June to August but focuses more on artisan crafts like jewelry, candles and fresh flowers than fresh produce like many farmers markets.

Creekside dining and seafood dishes around Howard

Howard Commons has become the community’s focal and gathering point since its completion, making up for the village’s lack of a downtown. Restaurants instead line Glendale and Velp avenues—many offering cheese curds and seafood dishes on the menus. Some restaurants sit along Howard’s various waterways, like River’s Bend, where large windows looking out across Duck Creek. Most of the area’s shopping centers and grocery stores are outside Howard’s boundaries along Lineville Road. Urban Edge Town Center is technically in Suamico, offering an Aldi and Festival Foods. In the southern corner of the city, there’s a Meijer closer to the Green Bay side of Howard.

Taking Interstate 41 to Packers games

Green Bay’s bus system doesn’t service Howard, so residents will need a car to get around. Velp Avenue connects the village to Green Bay for those commuting to the city’s manufacturers and factories for work or HSHS Saint Mary’s Hospital, about 3 miles away in Green Bay. Interstate 41 runs through the village's eastern side, connecting people to Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport and Lambeau Field, both about 6 miles away.

In the winter, the Green Bay area can get significant snow. The village plows and salts the streets, but many residents are used to driving in the snow. “The only difference between the first storm or two is that people act like they don’t know what they’re doing,” says Keller Williams Commercial Realtor Alex Young with a laugh. “They go, ‘I don’t know how to drive here anymore!’”
