Sixty miles from New York City is the city of Howell, New Jersey, and its neighborhood of East Howell has subdivisions, farmland and rolling greenery. Residents of the area favor East Howell for its balance of seclusion, community and access to regional destinations. “Eastern Howell is a great neighborhood because it has a good school system, it's suburban but it has a rural feel to it, and if people want a little space, it has proximity to the beach and transportation,” says Christopher Morales, a Realtor with Allegro Agency. Morales has been working in the area for four years. “People who want to be close to the shore but away from the hubbub pick this place.” East Howell is bisected by Interstate 195, which leads to the Atlantic coast and into Pennsylvania. Shopping and dining are 4 miles away along US Route 9.

Condos, townhouses and single-family homes with yards
Homes in East Howell often have manicured front and backyards with room for in-ground pools. “There are mostly condo communities and single-family homes,” says Morales. “The majority of it is sprawling country roads and some subdivisions.” Homes were frequently built in the late 90s, and New Traditional, split-level and Colonial Revival styles are common. Single-family homes range in price from $425,000 to $800,000. Larger homes range from about $810,000 to $1.3 million. Townhouses and condos can go for around $450,000 to $775,000. “The market has steadily increased,” says Morales. “Homes continue appreciating there, as they do in the rest of Monmouth County.” The CAP Index Crime Score for East Howell is 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Two school districts serve the area: The Howell Township School District, which receives a B from Niche, and the Freehold Regional High School District, which gets an A. Children are zoned for the Ardena Elementary School, which gets a B, or Greenville Elementary School, which receives a B-plus. They continue to Howell Township Middle School North or Howell Township Middle School South, both of which receive a B. Students attend Howell High School, which gets an A-minus, in the Freehold Regional High School District. The school has over 100 extracurricular activities, including a dance team, color guard and drama club.

Hiking trails and golf on local courses and nature preserves
Nature reserves and golf courses are intermixed with farmland and subdivisions here. The Manasquan Reservoir is popular for boating and fishing, offering kayak and rowboat rentals. When it's cold enough, there's ice skating. Visitors can stretch their legs on the trails surrounding the reservoir. Nearby, the Bear Swamp Natural Area has a hiking path and houses the brick ruins of the Maxim Power Company amid its swamp land. Near the southern end of East Howell is the Soldier Memorial Park, with a playground, picnic benches and several sports fields. East Howell has three 18-hole golf courses: Eagle Oaks Golf & Country Club and Cruz Golf Club are both private, and Howell Park Golf Course is open to the public.

Commuters use Interstate 195 and the Garden State Parkway
Commuters head about 67 miles west using Interstate 195 to arrive in Philadelphia in 90 minutes. New York City is also about 90 minutes north using the Garden State Parkway. The Jersey Shore is around 11 miles away and takes 20 minutes heading east on I-195. The nearest hospital is the Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center, 7 miles away, and the Newark Liberty International Airport is 46 miles north along the Garden State Parkway. Houses of worship within the area include the Grace Bible Church, the Living Spring Fellowship Church and the CrossPoint Church.
Shopping and dining in Farmingdale and along US Route 9
Farmingdale, a borough within East Howell, has a main street lined with strip malls and restaurants. Connie’s Restaurant is a family-run establishment serving classic American diner food for 50 years. Next door is a Shop n Bag for groceries. “There’s tons of stuff in Howell, especially along US Route 9,” says Morales. “Every chain you can think of.” Seasons Coal Fired Bistro offers Italian and pub food along U.S. Route 9. Also along the route are big-box stores like Walmart and Lowe’s. For groceries, there’s Target and Aldi.

Events along the Jersey Shore and in Howell
In the summer, residents head to the Jersey Shore. Belmar Beach, roughly 9 miles away, hosts movies on the beach every Wednesday from June to September. Beachgoers can also surf and swim in the water if they buy a beach badge. Nearer to the neighborhood, Howell Farmer’s Market runs every Sunday from May through October in Echo Lake Park, 6 miles south.
