Telegraph Hill's strategic location
During the Revolutionary War, Colonial sentries stood on top of Telegraph Hill in Hull to watch for British boats entering the Boston Harbor. Later, the hill’s height made it a natural choice for a telegraph station. Today, residents enjoy the same sweeping views of the water, though the telegraph tower is gone, and no one is on the lookout for incoming British vessels. Along its sloping streets, single-family homes rest close together. There are a few sidewalks, but in most cases, yards meet directly with the paved roads. Though Nantasket Beach draws thousands of visitors each summer, this section of Hull remains relatively protected from tourists. Locals take advantage of their aquatic surroundings and proximity to the town’s library, schools and the commuter ferry.

Sailing, surfing and fishing in Hull
Hull residents spend a lot of their time on the water. Some of them join the Hull Yacht Club and take up sailing. Others kayak or paddleboard in Hull Bay. Fishing for striped bass and bluefish is another pastime. At the Hull Lifesaving Museum, which serves as a multi-purpose community center, residents of all ages can learn to row open-water boats in teams. Locals can also purchase an annual beach parking pass and visit the private section of Nantasket Beach, which is isolated from the crowds of summer tourists at the southern end of Hull. In the evening, people sometimes take picnics to Fort Revere Park, which overlooks the water. Young people can visit the Village Green/Mitchell Field playground or practice soccer at Sullivan Field.
Telegraph Hill residents can watch the boats pass from Pemberton Point.

Shops and restaurants in Kenberma
Though Boston and Hingham offer malls, movie theaters and large grocery stores, many Telegraph Hill residents prefer to shop locally. “There really isn’t anything you need out of town,” says Andi Cohen, a Realtor with Charisma Realty, who has lived in Hull full-time for nearly 40 years. Less than 1 mile from the neighborhood is Jo’s Nautical Bar, which overlooks Hull Bay. “They have the best bloody marys with olives, celery and shrimp on them. It’s like a meal in itself,” Cohen says. Diners can also grab a bite at Shipwreck’d at the Nauti Dog, where they can watch the ferry boats coming and going. Most of Hull’s retail and dining is in the Kenberma neighborhood, around 3 miles from Telegraph Hill. At the Village Market in Kenberma, locals can pick up milk, lunch meat and even fresh produce. There’s also a women’s clothing store and several popular restaurants. Some people make the 10-mile trip into Hingham, where they can shop at a mall and stock up on food at Trader Joe’s and Fresh Market.

Homes on Telegraph Hill maximize their water views
On Telegraph Hill, homes are positioned to maximize their views of the water. Though some date back to the early 1900s, there are also a few that were built after 2000. Most single-family residences at the peak of the hill are wood-sided and have two stories and steeply pitched roofs. Lower-elevation offerings include single-story ranches and some Cape Cods. The majority of houses list from around $600,000 to $900,000, but those with the most coveted views or on the highest-elevated properties might list from around $1 million to more than $2.5 million. “We’ve never seen these kinds of prices before. People are finding the town’s value,” Cohen says. There are also some 1980s townhouses along Nantasket Avenue, which generally list between $210,000 and $425,000.

Camps, karaoke and the Harbor Illumination
The town of Hull stays active throughout the year. There are regular story times and holiday events at the library, which may or may not be haunted by the ghost of Irish activist and poet John Boyle O’Reilly. Jo’s Nautical Bar hosts karaoke nights and live music. In the summer months, children can learn surfing from South Shore Day Camp or participate in day camps offered by Hull Park and Recreation. The Hull Lifesaving Museum not only runs the open-water rowing classes, but it also organizes rowing contests and town-wide gatherings. At the end of July, locals come to watch as hundreds of flares are lit up for the Harbor Illumination. The event honors lost loved ones and the many Hull lifesavers who risked their lives to save sailors.

Small class sizes at Hull Public Schools
Children may attend Hull Public Schools, a district with a student-teacher ratio of 10-to-1 and a B-plus Niche score. In 2024, the middle school closed, and students are now served by an elementary and high school. Preschool through seventh-grade students attend the B-rated Lillian M. Jacobs School, which is located along Harborview Road in the neighborhood. Hull High School, which receives a B-plus rating, serves eighth through 12th-grade learners. High schoolers may participate in extracurriculars, including theater, sailing and soccer. Though there are several private schools within a 30-mile radius, most families prefer Hull schools’ small classroom sizes and the community feel of the district.

Taking the ferry into Boston
Residents stay connected to Boston by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Hingham/Hull ferry, which makes regular trips to and from downtown Boston and the Boston Logan International Airport. The ferry terminal is about 1 mile west of Telegraph Hill. “In the mornings, the boat people have their coffee and might read a book or have a conversation,” Cohen says. In the evenings, “they can unwind before they get home — some people have a cocktail.” Commuters can also drive or take an MBTA bus about 7 miles to Hingham, where they can catch a commuter rail train into Boston. A narrow causeway connects Telegraph Hill to the rest of Hull, and its sides are reinforced by a sea wall. As erosion and the effects of storms have gradually degraded the wall, the town is making plans to upgrade it. Traffic along Nantasket Avenue may be impacted by the repairs. Many people take the ferry into Boston for routine medical appointments, and the closest trauma center for emergency care is around 15 miles away in South Weymouth.

Though many of the properties on Telegraph Hill rest above the flood zone, residents are still advised to purchase flood insurance and prepare themselves for storms. Lenders may require the purchase of flood insurance for homes at lower elevations. Hull’s wastewater treatment facility is located along Nantasket Avenue at the base of Telegraph Hill.
