The Alphabets offers bay and ocean views on the Hull peninsula

The Alphabets is a residential neighborhood on the Hull peninsula. Its coastal homes line gridded streets running from A to Y, all tucked between Hull Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. “You have the bay side and the ocean side, so it’s just a great spot if you’re an outdoorsy person,” says Anne Marie Mehigan, a South Shore local and Realtor with Jack Conway. “There’s everything from cycling to swimming, and Nantasket Beach is a huge attraction in Hull.” Residents are about a mile from the beach, which bustles with activity each summer when full-time and seasonal residents come together on the water. “It can be very seasonal, but the majority of people are year-round residents. The neighborhood has a good mix, and it’s just a small, close-knit community where families know each other,” Mehigan says. The Alphabets also has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4. In addition to its recreational opportunities and small-town feel, The Alphabets boasts a central location in the South Shore of Massachusetts, less than 25 miles from Boston.

Outdoor recreation between Hull Bay and the Atlantic Ocean

Water activities are a big part of life here. Residents can access A Street Pier, which has a public boat ramp and fishing dock. It’s also a popular spot to watch the sun set over Hull Bay. “The bay has calmer waters for kayaking and things like that,” Mehigan says. For those looking to access the Atlantic Ocean, Nantasket Beach is about a mile from The Alphabets and has a long stretch of sandy shoreline. While sunbathers, swimmers and surfers can enjoy the beach, the Nantasket Beach Reservation also features a playground and a paved walking path. Sailing enthusiasts can join the Hull Yacht Club or the Nantasket Beach Saltwater Club, both about a mile from The Alphabets on the shore of Allerton Harbor.

A sports complex on L Street anchors the neighborhood with ball fields, tennis courts and a playground. The Hull Public Library has recreational and educational programs for all ages, while the town’s Council on Aging hosts adult programs at the Anne M. Scully Senior Center, less than a mile from The Alphabets. The senior center caters to the town’s significant retirement population; the neighborhood’s median age is 52.

Community events and programs keep Hull active year-round

Summer may be Hull’s busiest season, but community events keep the town active throughout all four seasons. Residents can head to Nantasket Beach for festivities like the Endless Summer Waterfront Festival, which celebrates the end of the season with live music, food trucks and an outdoor market. Other local favorites include the Nantasket Beach Car Show, the Music by the Sea concert series and an annual Thanksgiving bonfire on the beach. Locals can learn more about the town’s maritime history at the Hull Lifesaving Museum, which lights up the bay with more than a thousand flares each July during Harbor Illumination.

Coastal homes and waterfront living in The Alphabets

Residential streets feature a mix of beach cottages, bungalows, Cape Cods and New Englanders. Many properties have coastal-hued exteriors ranging from sandy neutrals to bay-inspired blues, and most were built during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Home prices typically range from $500,000 to $850,000, although waterfront properties tend to be more expensive and can fetch anywhere from $1 to $2.5 million. “There’s a little bit of everything, so it appeals to everyone as far as ability to purchase a home,” Mehigan says. “Hull also has a regulation set where you can only rent out your home for a month or more, which keeps it from being a rowdy place for vacation rentals.” The neighborhood’s peninsular geography means that it’s susceptible to coastal and inland flooding, generally caused by severe weather events, and residents may be required to purchase flood insurance.

Local businesses include waterfront restaurants like Local 02045

While most of Hull’s shopping and dining options are farther south down Nantasket Avenue, there are a handful of local spots in The Alphabets. Neighborhood favorites include L Street Pizza and Scoops Ice Cream, which opens seasonally to accommodate the summer crowd. For waterfront dining, Mehigan says that Local 02045 is a popular option. “That’s a seasonal spot, but it’s great if you want to get a bite to eat on the water,” she says. The restaurant serves New England classics and overlooks Safe Harbor Sunset Bay, a recreational marina with boat slips and transient dock spaces for patrons arriving on the water.

The Alphabets is about a mile north of Kenberma, another neighborhood that is home to the town’s main shopping district. Residents can head south and grab a treat at Weinberg’s Bakery, support local businesses like Nantasket Paint & Hardware and pick up grocery essentials at Village Market. “You don’t have to leave Hull to get all of your necessities,” Mehigan says. There are more waterfront bars and restaurants farther south down Nantasket Avenue, and locals typically head to Hingham, about 5 miles away, for bigger shopping centers with name-brand stores such as Trader Joe’s.

Hull Public Schools offer a variety of educational programs

Hull Public Schools serves the community. The district earns an overall grade of B-plus from Niche and has a lower-than-average student-teacher ratio of 10-to-1. Kids in prekindergarten through seventh grade may attend the B-rated Lillian M. Jacobs School, which offers before- and after-school programs. The B-plus-rated Hull High School covers eighth through 12th grade, and its Robust Applied Experience program allows seniors to intern with groups like the Hull Fire Department and the United States Coast Guard. “The schools have amazing ocean views, and the student-teacher ratio is really low compared to other towns in the area,” Mehigan says. Nearby private school options include the Catholic Saint Paul School, which covers prekindergarten through eighth grade and does not have a Niche rating.

There are multiple transportation options to reach Boston from Hull

Residents are less than 25 miles from Boston and can reach the city via car or ferry. Massachusetts Route 3A and Interstate 93 offer a direct route to Boston, although travel may take longer than expected due to traffic, particularly in the summer. For those looking to avoid traffic jams, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) ferry system provides year-round service from Hull to downtown Boston. “A lot of people don’t realize how fast you can get into Boston by taking the ferry. It’s a great way to be connected during the summer months when the traffic is tough and you’re trying to commute home,” Mehigan says. The ride typically takes 25 minutes, and the ferry also stops at Boston Logan International Airport, about 25 miles from the neighborhood.

MBTA bus stops along Nantasket Avenue, and the Nantasket Junction commuter rail station, about 5 miles from The Alphabet, provide even more ways for locals to get around the South Shore. While Boston is known for its top-ranking hospitals, such as Massachusetts General Hospital, healthcare options closer to home include South Shore Hospital, about 12 miles from The Alphabets.
