A former oil boomtown north of Houston

At the turn of the century, Humble—pronounced with a silent H—was home to one of the largest oil fields in Texas. Today, many of its 16,800 residents commute to Houston, about 20 miles south, for work. "If you work downtown, Humble is about the first area people migrate to because it's a family-oriented area and we have all the amenities and necessities close by," says Sandy Swensen, a Realtor with Keller Williams Northeast who specializes in the Humble area. The highly rated Humble Independent School District is a draw for families. At the same time, the city’s proximity to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, just 5 miles away, makes it well-suited for residents who frequently travel for work.

Historic homes downtown, newer subdivisions near the airport

The median home price in Humble is $310,000, and prices have remained steady since 2022. Many homes in the downtown area are older and include modest 1920s cottages and midcentury ranch-style homes, with prices in the low- to mid-$200,000s. Newer subdivisions with larger homes are located outside downtown, but many houses are in subdivisions just outside the city limits, like Kingwood and Kenswick to the northwest. With George Bush Intercontinental Airport nearby, some homes are in the flight path of planes landing and taking off, which could cause noise issues.

Humble's small downtown is home to a few local restaurants, mostly specializing in Southern-style food. It includes Humble City Cafe, a local landmark on Main Street since 1914. Most shopping and chain restaurants are concentrated along I-69. Deerbrook Mall is a large indoor shopping center with anchor stores like Dillard's and Macy's, plus an AMC theater.
