Colonial and modern style homes along Main Street
Nestled between Harrisburg and Hershey, Hummelstown might seem like a small, easy-to-overlook community when traveling to Pennsylvania’s state capital or the wonderful, world-renowned amusement park. Taking a closer look will reveal how this little borough, with its charming downtown and rich history, forms one of the most popular places to live in the region.
Hummelstown is not as recognizable as Hershey and its namesake confectionary company. However, Hummelstown is responsible for the iconic brownstone apartments in New York City. Through the latter half of the 1800s and early 20th century, the Hummelstown Brownstone Company operated a large quarry near the community and became the largest producer of the stone on the East Coast. More than a century later, brownstone churches and offices sit along the town’s two-lane Main Street corridor, interspersed between Colonial-style homes and storefronts made of brick or painted in pale shades of green, white, blue and yellow. More modern homes can be found a few blocks from Main Street.

Colonials, ranchers and more near Main Street
Owing to its highly coveted environs, homes in the community sell incredibly fast. Homebuyers need to act quickly, as homes often sell after a week on the market. Despite the town’s small size, a good variety of homes at different price points are available. $150,000 can score buyers an old Colonial-inspired brick row house or foursquare needing repairs or updates. In the $250,000 to $500,000 range, housing options expand to midcentury ranch-style homes, split levels and modern single-family homes with driveways and attached garages.

Retro dining at the Soda Jerk and cold craft brews at Rubber Soul
Along Main Street and Hanover Street are numerous retailers and restaurants, many of which have been part of the community for several generations, contributing to the neighborhood’s old-school character. For a truly retro experience, the Soda Jerk Diner & Dairy Bar serves old-fashioned malts and shakes. Aside from its sweets, the food menu features a large selection of American, Italian and Greek diner staples, including lobster ravioli, gyro salads and bacon-wrapped meatloaf. With Hummelstown located right next to the town of Hershey and its king-sized amusement park, the communities entertain tourists throughout the year. In Hummelstown, though, there are a few spots where most of the patrons are friends and neighbors from the area. A couple blocks off Main Street, Chick’s Tavern hosts live bands and guests who come to play pool and unwind after work. True beer connoisseurs can check out the Rubber Soul Brewing Company’s industrial chic taproom to indulge in finely made craft beers, refreshing cocktails, brick oven pizzas and homemade bar food.

This is a small town, with overall a really tight-knit community, engaging and giving business owners, and a high school that everyone can rally behind. While there is not always a lot to do, we have the basics of a town to keep things interesting, and are close to Hershey, PA with new tourist locations always popping up.
