A quiet sanctuary by the river, that doubles as a hub for industry
In Altizer, wide neighborhood streets come with both a collection of established homes and views of the Appalachian foothills. This is a sleepy, mostly residential pocket of Huntington. But it’s home to the Special Metals facility, one of the area’s largest employers, and is close to the amenities of the city’s busier neighborhoods. “It is a close-knit, family-driven community. It’s centrally located,” says Seth Crabtree, a local Realtor with Realty Advantage and a Huntington native. “The one thing about Huntington neighborhoods is they’re easily accessible.”

Properties with space to breathe
Midcentury Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes make up most of the Altizer area, with compact floor plans averaging around 1,200 square feet. One of the neighborhood’s defining features is that, though residents can see the hills in the distance, the lots here are on flat ground. “Almost everybody has a big front or back yard,” Crabtree says. “So that’s also a nice little bonus over there.” Houses in the neighborhood sell for $20,000 to $160,000 based on the condition and size. “There're still a lot of owner-occupied properties over there. There’re not a lot of rentals over there,” says local Realtor Preston Cole of Property Professionals, who has more than 40 years of experience.

Nancy’s is an option for a quick bite

The spot also has a deli with bacon, ribeyes, pork chops and more. The neighborhood is also right across the Guyandotte River from U.S. Route 60, where there are several restaurants, including the locally owned Luigi’s, The lasagna, calzones and garlic knots at Luigi’s are well-liked. Jolly Pirate Donuts here is open 24/7 and offers gyros in addition to pastries. Route 60 has a Walmart Supercenter, too. The city hosts myriad community events each year, several of which happen just northwest of Altizer in Downtown Huntington. Chilifest is among them, a tradition for more than 40 years that draws competitors from around the region in October. Visitors can sample cups of chili for just $1 and peruse an assortment of other vendors along Huntington’s 3rd Avenue. Route 60 helps make connect residents to other parts of the city
Altizer may occupy a spot of eastern Huntington all to its own, but it’s far from remote. “It’s right off of Route 60, so it’s a hop, skip and a jump from both downtown and from getting on to the interstate to go to other parts of the state,” Crabtree says. Downtown is just 5 miles away, and drivers can be on Interstate 64 in just about a mile. I-64 is convenient for trips out of town and it takes people to the Huntington Tri-State Airport, 17 miles west. The airport offers commercial flights through Allegiant and American Airlines. Also, all residents are within 3 miles of Special Metals, the globe’s largest nickel alloy plant of its kind.
