Huntington’s heart is full of historic character
Downtown Huntington's tall art deco-style buildings are home to a mix of restaurants representing various cultures steps away from the area’s historic housing, which dates back to the turn of the 20th century. Historic buildings converted into condos, duplexes, single-family homes and apartments provide housing options, but living in here is all about location and convenience. "The people who move downtown typically want to be near the theaters and the movie theaters and the restaurants. There’s live music several nights a week downtown," says Whitney Hood-Gesner, a local Realtor with Hood Realty Company and a lifelong Huntington resident. While Downtown Huntington provides a hub activity, it isn't all hustle and bustle as nearby Harris Riverfront Park allows residents to escape to the riverside for outdoor recreation.

From Sip to Jim’s, people can take their pick of local spots
Not only is downtown full of places to eat, but many have roots there. “There’s a lot of restaurants, locally owned downtown, that people love,” Hood-Gesner says. Jim's Steak & Spaghetti House, open since 1938, is a local favorite for its spaghetti with meat sauce and strawberry pie, available for a limited time each May as part of its annual Strawberry Pie Week, Hood-Gesner says. Hibachi Japanese Steakhouse, a sushi spot, and Nawab Fine Indian Cuisine, which has a buffet, are just a bit north of Jim's. The Market, a food hall with 10 vendors, serves everything from barbecue to gyros. Sip Downtown Brasserie has 90 wines and over 30 whiskeys available. Pullman Square, a shopping center with stores including Chico’s and T. K. Dodrill Jewelers, has been around since 1984. There’s a Kroger just about 3 miles away, too.

Options for a range of lifestyles
Downtown is a more urban setting compared to other parts of town. Condos like the Renaissance and the St. James are converted early 20th-century buildings with units in the center of downtown. St. James condos range in size from around 1,000 to 1,300 square feet, while the Renaissance units have over 2,600 square feet. Just south of the core of businesses is a collection of mostly multistory colonial-style homes with brick exteriors that are over a century old. Some of these offer rental potential, including duplexes. Condos sell for $160,000 to $450,000 based on square footage, while houses sell for $50,000 to $140,000, with condition being a big factor. The area's CAP Index Crime Score is 7, higher than the national average of 4.

Feel the beat on 9th Street
This area is packed with opportunities to see live entertainment. One of the staples is 9th Street Live. “They shut down a portion of 9th street and have live music and festivities,” Hood-Gesner says. The 9th Street Live series happens every Friday from May to August, hosting a variety of bands, with food and drinks available from local restaurants. People can also see concerts at places like Foundry Theater, which has shows almost every weekend. The Marshall Health Network Arena hosts concerts as well as conventions, like the West Virginia Tattoo Expo and productions like Sesame Street Live. The Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center is downtown, too, an art deco-style landmark that opened in 1928 and has hosted all sorts of movies and live performances over the decades. The intricately designed building is currently undergoing a $30 million renovation.
Harris Riverfront Park has high appeal
Harris Riverfront Park runs along the Ohio River and includes plenty of space for walking or sitting by the water. There’s also a playground and outdoor amphitheater. The amphitheater and park host events such as Huntington Ribfest in September, which includes food and live music.
