An amenity-filled residential pocket of Huntington

In Fairfield, an assortment of homes rest on either side of Hal Greer Boulevard. Named after the first Black athlete to receive a scholarship from the city’s Marshall University, who went on to an illustrious NBA career, Hal Greer Boulevard is lined with all sorts of businesses and Cabell Huntington Hospital, one of the area’s major medical centers. The thoroughfare places residents conveniently close to amenities. “The Fairfield neighborhood is much more mixed-use — you’ve got commercial, and you’ve got the large hospital. Then you have single-family home dwellings as well,” says Whitney Hood-Gesner, a local Realtor with Hood Realty Company.

Classic homes with character

Fairfield features a mix of single- and multifamily residences, but all were built from the early-to-mid 20th century and most have Craftsman or colonial styling. Many of the neighborhood’s options have multistory floor plans, that stretch 1,358 square feet on average. These houses were built closely together, but properties still come with a good bit of backyard space on compact lots. Homes that need work sell for $20,000 to $75,000, while those in better condition go for $80,000 to $300,000.

Tudor’s is known for its college-themed breakfast sandwiches

Among the amenities on Hal Greer Boulevard is a location of the West Virginia-based chain Tudor's Biscuit World. “That is a very, very, very popular breakfast place,” Hood-Gesner says. Breakfast biscuits are named after nearby college mascots, including the “Thundering Herd” and “Mountaineer.” Tudor’s also has lunch and dinner menus with items from pork barbecue sandwiches to country-fried steak. Locals can travel farther south on Hal Greer Boulevard for more options, including Frostop Drive-In, a nostalgic spot known in large part for its root beer. People here can pick up quick essentials at the Walgreens on Hal Greer or head to the Kroger 2 miles north on Fifth Avenue.

Huntington Music and Arts Festival is held annually in August

Ritter Park also hosts multiple events throughout the year, including the Huntington Music and Arts Festival in late August. The weeklong celebration features live bands, short film screenings and comedy acts. There’s also the Funktafest in October, a music and arts festival with an Egyptian theme. Other events in town include the West Virginia Hot Dog Festival downtown in July, which includes everything from hot dog eating and root beer chugging contests to a car and truck cruise-in.

Cabell elementary schools offer after-school activities

The Cabell County Schools system covers this area, a district with a B rating on Niche. Students here can go to either the B-minus-rated Meadows Elementary or the C-plus-rated Spring Hill Elementary, depending on where in the neighborhood they live. Both schools have after-school programming. Students at Huntington Middle, which has a B-minus grade, can participate in sports teams including cross country, tennis, basketball and track. The B-rated Huntington High offers elective courses in topics like computer science, astronomy and economics. The Marshall School of Pharmacy, which has four-degree programs, is in the neighborhood. And the core of Marshall’s campus — West Virginia’s second-largest University with a total enrollment of more than 11,000 — is just about a mile north.

Ritter Park is a popular attraction

Hood-Gesner describes Ritter Park as Huntington’s version of New York City’s Central Park. The space has its own rose garden and a fountain, plus a playground, dog park and walking paths. Rotary Park is a larger option for residents on the east side of Fairfield. The 100-acre park features two disc golf courses, a basketball court, trails for hiking or mountain biking.

Amtrak offers access to the region

Fairfield residents are within 2 miles of Huntington’s Amtrak station, where riders can catch a train to cities like Charlottesville and Cincinnati. It’s also about 2 miles from Interstate 64, which can take drivers east or west out of town. The Huntington Tri-State Airport is an 11-mile trip west on I-64 and offers flights through American Airlines and Allegiant. Fairfield has multiple houses of worship across multiple denominations, including St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, the Muslim Association of Huntington, Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist Church and Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

Cabell Huntington Hospital is in the neighborhood

Cabell Huntington Hospital, a 303-bed facility, is on Hal Greer Boulevard. It’s a learning facility for Marshall’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, and it includes a cancer center and a children's hospital.
