Neighborhood in Huntington, West Virginia
Cabell County 25702, 25703
Classic homes are getting new attention
Many of Highlawn’s houses were built in the early 20th century, examples of the bungalow and foursquare styles. And while some homes come with views of the river, particularly those on Staunton Road, most line a series of quiet, straight-line city blocks, some of which are paved with brick. The presence of the hospital is keeping interest in Highlawn’s homes high, despite their age. “Because the hospital continually expands, we’re seeing a lot of flippers that have gone into that neighborhood,” Crabtree says. “And a lot of houses that had been in disrepair have been restored.” Fixer-uppers in Highlawn sell for between $20,000 and $60,000, while those that are already more polished go for $60,000 to $300,000 with proximity to St. Mary’s among the factors. “Plus you have a lot of people that reside over there that work at Marshall University,” says Preston Cole, a Realtor with Property Professionals who has more than 40 years of experience.A dazzling display for Fourth of July
Highlawn’s location in relation to downtown means residents have several f community events at their fingertips, covering a range of occasions and interests. The West Virginia Hot Dog Festival in July is one of the long-running traditions downtown, dating back more than 20 years. The event features a car show, inflatables for kids, live music and, of course, a hot dog eating contest. An Italian festival, the only one of its kind in West Virginia, takes place downtown in April, a day full of music, dancing, food, wine and more. Another staple is Dawg Dazzle at downtown’s Harris Riverfront Park, the biggest Fourth of July celebration in the Tri-State area, with fireworks right over the Ohio River.Fifth Avenue gives residents quick access to amenities
Fifth Avenue is the main hub of commercial activity in Highlawn, lined with a variety of businesses. Locals can find everything from Kroger to Advance Auto Parts here. Restaurants on the stretch include chains like Cook Out and Dairy Queen, plus local spots like Rio Grande, whose tacos are well-liked. Fifth Avenue is also a connection to Huntington’s vibrant downtown, full of many more restaurants, shops and more. “There’s a lot of thriving, independent businesses,” Crabtree says.St. Mary’s sprawling campus is located just off 1st Avenue, which is one of the most prominent medical centers across the state. The hospital’s features include dedicated cancer, heart, joint replacement and neuroscience centers, and the facility employs more than 2,600 in total.
McClelland Park offers riverside recreation
Many Highlawn residents are within walking distance of McClelland Park, a neighborhood green space along the Ohio River. “It’s got tennis courts and playgrounds and everything that overlook the river,” Cole says. The space has a walking path and a basketball court, too.Third Avenue is a link to downtown and beyond
The thoroughfare of 3rd Avenue bisects Highlawn and provides a straight shot to Marshall and to Downtown Huntington, about 2 miles west. Third Avenue is also a way to reach Washington Avenue, U.S. Route 52 and then Interstate 64 for trips to the Huntington Tri-State Airport, 13 miles away. The airport facilitates commercial flights through Allegiant and American Airlines.Highlawn Elementary offers modern amenities
