A rural respite in Huntington
Country roads take residents home in Southern Hills. Situated just south of Huntington’s busier, urban core, this neighborhood is full of rustic character. Narrow, quiet streets and roomy lots are common here, adorning the region’s rolling landscape. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant with two parks in the neighborhood. “If you’re getting in where you’re not packed in so tightly with other neighbors, that’s a plus,” says Realtor Debi Reynolds of the Debi Reynolds Group, who has over 30 years of industry experience. “So that always makes a big difference in resale and development.”

Established homes are an attraction here
Southern Hill’s winding roads are lined with an eclectic variety of housing options, most built in the mid-20th century. “That area does have a lot of the older homes,” says Betty Sargent, a Realtor with Old Colony Realtors, with over 30 years of experience. “But they have so much charm to them. And that’s another reason it’s a draw.” Many are variations of the colonial and Craftsman styles with brick exteriors, but there are some outliers, too, including contemporary and new traditional builds. Floor plans average almost 1,900 square feet, and many lots are a little less than a quarter of an acre. Most homes sell for between $100,000 and $500,000 based on condition and square footage.

Students are covered by Cabell and Wayne County school districts
Most Southern Hills children can attend schools in the Cabell County Schools system, which gets a B on Niche. The C-plus-rated Central City Elementary has an afterschool robotics program. The B-minus-rated Huntington Middle School offers a band program with instruction both during and after school. Huntington High earns a B grade and has course offerings in topics from mythology to pharmacology.
Some students on the western side of Southern Hills fall into the C-plus-rated Wayne County Schools system. They can attend the B-plus-rated Kellogg Elementary and Vinson Middle, which has a B-minus grade. Kellogg has its own summer camp, and students at Vinson can participate in sports teams ranging from basketball to golf. The C-rated Spring Valley High has a career and technical education department with programs in disciplines like carpentry and sports medicine.
Interstate 64 is easy to access
Interstate 64, the area’s major highway, bisects the neighborhood. Drivers can get on I-64 to travel east or west out of town. The artery is also a connection to the Huntington Tri-State Airport, which operates commercial flights through American Airlines and Allegiant and is just 10 miles west.
Whether Kiwanis or Harveytown, park space is aplenty
Southern Hills’ rustic setting leaves room for ways to enjoy some fresh air. The neighborhood is home to both Kiwanis Park and Harveytown Park. “I think the local children like those areas,” Reynolds says. “They’re off the beaten path.” Kiwanis Park is known for its Kiwanis Vistas trail network, open to hiking and biking. Harveytown Park has a well-kept, farm-themed playground. Residents aren’t far from Ritter Park, either, a landmark in Huntington for its setting — complete with a rose garden and a fountain. Locals can also enjoy free time at the Museum of Radio & Technology, whose exhibits cover radio, TV and more, and the Huntington Museum of Art, whose collection includes over 16,000 pieces. The art museum’s property includes a 1-mile nature trail.

Down Home is an option for food close to home
Residents looking for a quick bite can swing by the area’s Down Home Salads for something from the lunch menu, whether a garden salad or a black forest ham sandwich. Southern Hills is only about 3 miles from downtown Huntington, too, where there are plenty more dining options, whether the crab cakes at Jewel City Seafood Restaurant & Market, or the steaks at 21 at the Frederick. People can also head just about 6 miles west for one of the area’s staples, in nearby Ceredo: Rocco's Ristorante. The lasagna is popular at Rocco’s, which has been open for more than 50 years. “Rocco’s is by far top of the line, fine cuisine,” Reynolds says. “Packed always.” There’s a Kroger just about 3 miles north of Southern Hills, too, in the downtown Huntington area.

Fireworks dazzle locals downtown
Downtown Huntington is a hub for an assortment of events each year. Among them is the Dawg Dazzle, a Fourth of July celebration held at Harris Riverfront Park, with live music and fireworks. Dawg Dazzle is billed as the biggest Fourth of July event in the Tri-State area. People can also go to the 9th Street Live shows downtown, a series of free concerts on Fridays from May to August. The R&B Soul Block Party is a new option downtown in late July at Heritage Station, with multiple DJs, food trucks and more.
