Midcentury Craftsman bungalows are the predominate housing style
Most of the homes in Walnut Hills were built between the early to mid-20th century. “You have a lot of different story-and-a-half homes and some rancher homes,” says Realtor Preston Cole of Property Professionals, who has more than 40 years of experience. Craftsman is the most common architectural style around the neighborhood. The houses here are built closely together on narrow roads that wind through hills courtesy of the region’s location by the Appalachian Mountains. Conditions can vary — while some options in the neighborhood have already been updated, others still need work. That’s reflected in the pricing, which can range from $10,000 to $155,000 based on how move-in ready a property is. According to Cole, some of the homes here are used as rentals, Cole says.Rotary Park is a place for community events
The neighborhood’s Rotary Park provides space for multiple community events. Each spring,The Rotary Park Community Egg Hunt includes 8,000 eggs stuffed with candy and toys, while the park’s disc golf courses host multiple tournaments, annually.
Harris Riverfront Park hosts one of the city’s larger events the Dawg Dazzle Fourth of July celebration. The event is the largest Independence Day celebration in the Tri-State area.
Gino’s offers close-by pizza and pasta
Walnut Hills has one of Huntington’s three West Virginia-based chain Gino’s Pizza & Spaghetti House locations. Gino’s has wings and subs in addition to pizza and spaghetti. Route 60, which runs through the neighborhood, connects locals to big-box stores like Walmart and Gabe’s and chain restaurants like Texas Roadhouse to Taco Bell. There’s also a Kroger 2 miles north in Highlawn, near Marshall. The neighborhood’s amenities include multiple houses of worship as well, including Tenth Avenue Church of God, Norway Avenue Church of Christ and Huntington Gospel Chapel. “Huntington’s the City of Churches,” Crabtree says.
A range of amenities are available at Rotary Park
Rotary Park stretches 108 acres and is a quick bike ride or drive away for most Walnut Hills residents. “It has been maintained by the local Rotary Club for years and years,” Cole says. “You have a lot of people that use that.” The park has a playground, baseball and softball diamonds and trails. People can take a hike up to the park’s overlook tower to peer down at the city. One of the West Virginia Department of Tourism’s signature “Almost Heaven” swings was installed at the top of the park in summer 2024. It became one of more than two dozen swings around the state, providing a photo opportunity for park visitors.Route 60 opens residents to the rest of the region
Route 60 connects locals to Interstate 64 for commutes throughout the region. People can take Route 60, also known as Midland Trail, to I-64 for drives 50 miles east to West Virginia’s capital, Charleston. Walnut Hills is about 3 miles from Huntington’s Amtrak station that offers trains to Cincinnati and Indianapolis. Huntington does have a small airport, the Huntington Tri-State Airport, which offers flights on American and Allegiant Airlines about 20 miles away. The city also has two hospitals both within 5 miles of the neighborhood.Cabell County schools offer targeted programming
