Classic home styles to expansive mansions
Streets curve and climb up a mountain in Chapman Heights, where classic ranch and split-level homes occupy spacious lots framed by mature trees. Further up the mountain, brick millennium mansions perch on sloped lots that overlook the forested landscape below. Prices range from $128,000 to $1.2 million, but buyers can expect a three-bedroom ranch-style to sell for approximately $300,000. A handful of mansions can get a tick over $1 million. Condos sell for about $115,000. Many homebuyers, says Locke, are younger buyers who “don't have kids yet. It’s a move-up market – moving from an apartment to a home.”Trails unfurl in the Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve
Opportunities for outdoor recreation abound, with numerous city parks, protected greenspaces and hiking trails within the neighborhood or very close to it. Tucked between I-565 and Oakwood Avenue, Optimist Park & Recreation Center is open to the public for Tai Chi, volleyball and basketball, pickleball, and bridge. The adjacent stadium is used for baseball, soccer and other sports. Philpot Park and its playground are just around the bend. The Chapman Community Swim Club keeps kids occupied from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and active kids can join the Chapman Cheetahs swim team. The North Alabama Land Trust manages trails at several protected green spaces across the city, including a 4.5-mile loop at the nearby Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve. The path through Huntsville City Schools
Children enroll in the Huntsville City Schools District, which scores a B-plus on Niche. Students begin their education at Chapman Elementary then continue to Chapman Middle and Lee High Schools. On Niche, the elementary and high school each earn a C-plus while the middle school earns a C. Lee’s current facility opened during the 2012-13 school year, and the high school is home to the district’s Creative and Performing Arts Magnet Program. The program allows Lee-district students and interested Huntsville-area children to study theater, art, dance, photography and choir. Located just north of the neighborhood, Alabama A&M is an Historical Black College and University (HBCU) offering more than 60 undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs. It celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2025.Minutes from Downtown Huntsville
The city hosts Movies in the Park at Big Spring Park East downtown throughout the year, which features food trucks, live music and a feature film. Two minor league teams call Huntsville home: the Huntsville Havoc hockey team, which plays at Von Braun Center, and the Rocket City Trash Pandas baseball team, which plays at Toyota Field.
Interstate 565 and the Orbit bus line
Interstate 565 is a 22-mile auxiliary highway that runs through the western portion of Chapman Heights. The roadway connects Interstate 65 in Decatur, Alabama, to U.S. Route 72 in Huntsville and is a straight shot to the Huntsville International Airport, which is 15 miles away. While the Orbit bus line has no stops in Chapman Heights, the Route 7 Meridian/A&M line stops at the Oakwood Village Shopping Center, just south of the neighborhood. It’s a 15- to 20-minute drive to Research Park and Redstone Arsenal.Oakdale Village Shopping Center and nearby restaurants
It's a quick five- to six-minute drive to downtown, Locke says, and downtown's top restaurants feel almost part of the neighborhood. Favorites include The Poppy and Parliament, an elevated British-style pub, and Purveyor, where American fare comes with inventive twists and the menu changes weekly. An outpost of Birmingham’s Big Spoon Creamery is also downtown. Roses Discount Store in Chapman Heights anchors Oakdale Village Shopping Center, which is also home to a Dairy Queen and a Mexican restaurant. Turbo Coffee is next door at the Lincoln Mill campus. Walmart Neighborhood Market is located further west on Northwest Oakwood Avenue.
