Farley Community offers quiet streets and family appeal

Life is simple in Farley Community, and that's how residents like it. Just north of the Tennessee River, it's close to the church and elementary school that give this small community its name. "It's a very suburban, very family-oriented place with excellent schools," says Anne Owen, a Realtor and associate broker with Legend Realty. "Even though it's in South Huntsville, shopping isn't far away either — you can drive across the whole city of Huntsville in 30 minutes." Farley Community is also a short drive from the Army's Redstone Arsenal. "Redstone is an important employer here, and it's unique because it's also home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center," Owen says. With classic suburban homes, well-rated schools and access to shopping and employers, Farley Community attracts families and others looking to settle down.

Classic suburban architecture with prices under $300K

Farley Community is a traditional Southern subdivision, with homes on tidy lots lined with paved sidewalks and decorated with trees and shrubbery. Backyards are large enough for entertainment spaces or above-ground pools. Ranch-style homes sell for between $180,000 and $250,000. New Traditional homes with Colonial Revival and Cape Cod-inspired exteriors sell between $250,000 and $300,000. Most houses have updated interiors when they go on the market, which may increase their selling price. Homes in Farley are just a short walk from local greenways and parks, so residents have outdoor recreation within reach.

River access, parks and trails surround Farley Community

Green spaces surround Farley, with the Appalachian Mountains and their hiking trails to the east, wetlands to the west and the winding Tennessee River to the south. "The Tennessee River is really popular with Huntsville residents, especially boating and fishing," Owen says. "Ditto Landing is a marina close to the neighborhood, and there's an adjacent picnic area that's popular with folks." The Carol D. Hudson Recreation Area is also nearby, offering athletic fields, a playground, a fishing pier and a public boat ramp onto the river. Starting just southeast of Farley, the Tennessee River Greenway walking and biking path runs south to the waterway and north to Bell Mountain Park, another community space with athletic fields, a playground and its own walking trail. Other community green spaces nearby include Sandhurst Park and Buchanan Park, which both have athletic fields and play areas.

No public transit, but major roads connect Farley to downtown

Public transportation is not readily available here, so most residents get around by car. The community is close to Highway 231, which links Farley to Downtown Huntsville and Interstate 565, about 10 miles north. Interstate 65, which connects to other cities like Nashville, is 30 miles from Farley. Major employer Redstone Arsenal is about 20 miles away. Farley is about 8 miles from the closest hospital, Crestwood Medical Center, and just over 20 miles from Huntsville International Airport.

Grocery stores, restaurants and retail just off Highway 231

A central commercial area surrounds Highway 231, also called Memorial Parkway. Grocery stores like ALDI, Publix and Sam's Club can be found along this main artery, along with small businesses, retailers and restaurants. Chains like Chick-fil-A and Whataburger mix with local eateries like Kacey's Home Cooking. This buffet has comfort food with rotating daily menus. Highway 231 travels north to Downtown Huntsville, which offers restaurants, bars, museums and entertainment venues like the Von Braun Center and Mars Music Hall. Highway 72, or University Drive, leads to another commercial area with Walmart, Target and shopping malls like Bridge Street Towne Center. The town center has retail chains, boutique shops, a Cinemark Theater and restaurants like the high-end Connor's Steak and Seafood.
