Convenient commute to Downtown Huntsville with beautiful mountain views
Jones Valley residents love where they live. The neighborhood of about 600 homes has a unique urban-suburban feel, with Downtown Huntsville just north and the city’s tallest mountain peak immediately west. The surrounding mountains and central flat farmlands make Jones Valley seem like a secluded enclave, but neighborhood side streets make it easy for residents to try all the downtown restaurants without ever getting on the highway. Like the rest of Huntsville, Jones Valley has seen some major growth over the last 20 to 30 years. Dozens of organized subdivisions have been popping up all over the area, including a new gated golf course community at the top of Huntsville Mountain. While longtime locals are excited about this continued growth, they want to make sure their beloved home maintains its natural charm. “People care about the area,” says Monica Evans, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “They love Jones Valley and want to preserve its integrity and beauty.”
The Ledges offers panoramic mountain views
Jones Valley’s winding residential streets showcase a variety of home styles, ranging from new Italianate townhomes to 1960s split levels. Most older homes center around the Jones Valley Recreational Association on the west side of Carl T. Jones Drive. There are the split levels, similar ranch-style homes, and boxy Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals from the 1990s. Half-acre carpet-like lawns feature tree-lined backyards big enough to add an in-ground pool, while the front yards stretch to the curb. In the early 2000s, a premier gated golf course community known as The Ledges developed atop Huntsville’s highest mountain peak. This luxurious subdivision has eight-bedroom Neoclassical mansions and two-story Italianate townhomes, all offering spectacular views. These stately homes can list anywhere from $800,000 for a townhome to about $3 million for a 13,000 square foot mansion. As for the rest of Jones Valley, most listings fall within the $450,000 to $750,000 range.
Challenger Middle is opening a new campus in 2027
Jones Valley students are zoned for Huntsville City Schools. The district recently proposed a 10-year capital plan to build and make improvements to several schools across the area, including a few in the neighborhood. Jones Valley Elementary is not one of these schools, but its campus is still relatively new. After a tornado in 1989 left the campus in shambles, a completely new 85,000-square-foot elementary school was constructed. Challenger Middle School will have a new campus by 2027, and new turf athletic fields will soon come to Grissom High School. While the middle school gets a B-plus from Niche, the elementary and high schools both score an overall A-minus.
Feed the geese at Jones Farm Park
A rusty draw bridge crosses over Aldridge Creek, connecting the west end of Valley Bend to the vast, open green space at Jones Farm Park. Many residents spend afternoons on one of the lakeside benches here, just feeding the geese and watching the local fisherman reel in bass. From the park, the Atwood Linear Greenway treks alongside the creek for about a mile until it reaches the 27-hole golf course at Valley Hill Country Club. Families spend summer days playing tennis and splashing around the three pools at the Jones Valley Recreational Association.
Find groceries at Piedmont Point Shopping Center
Jones Valley residents have plenty of shopping and dining options to choose from. There’s Piedmont Point Shopping Center with a Publix and a couple of restaurants, and then the much larger mall, Valley Bend. Along the neighborhood’s south border, this Target-anchored power center features about 25 restaurants and retailers, most of which are national chains. It’s also home to Huntsville’s largest AMC theater. For a more local dining experience, residents can try one of the gourmet burgers at Peppered Pig or grab a milkshake from Handel’s Ice Cream.
Airport Road leads to Redstone Arsenal
Living in Jones Valley makes it easy to get just about anywhere in Huntsville. Residents can follow Whitesburg Drive 5 miles north to access the downtown district or take Airport Road about 7 miles west to Redstone Arsenal. US Route 231 sits just west of the neighborhood, next to Crestwood Medical Center. It intersects with Interstate 565, which brings commuters to Research Park in about 10 miles.
