Huntsville suburb with easy access to modern conveniences

Two miles south of downtown Huntsville, suburban Mayfair-Piedmont blends convenience with affordability. “Folks get more bang for their buck here than in neighboring areas, and don’t have to fight downtown traffic because they can basically get anywhere by walking or biking,” says Ben Nemec, Associate Broker with Keller Williams Realty who’s been selling homes in the area since 2018. Many of the neighborhood’s nearly 4,500 residents include retirees, families and young professionals, many of whom commute to Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal or Cummings Research Park. Kids can attend highly rated schools and play ball at area greenspaces, while shoppers can get from the grocery store to neighborhood restaurants in no time.

Pro soccer, sand volleyball and adult softball

At the 428-acre John Hunt Park in the neighborhood’s southwestern end, residents can watch professional soccer league games, play sand volleyball or check out the Hermes Guided Missile. The Park’s eastern Joe Davis Stadium hosts local high school football games and the Huntsville City Football Club. Centrally, adult baseball and softball teams compete at Mayfair Park, while youngsters swirl down playground slides.

Ribeye with wine and country-fried steak

In 2023, Wine Spectator named Mayfair-Piedmont's Char Restaurant one of the best places in the world to enjoy wine. Just east of Interstate 231, Char serves southern-style dishes inside a rustic chic setting; diners can enjoy a 20-ounce bone-in chili-rubbed ribeye with red wine, while listening to live piano music. South along Drake Avenue, locals share all-day breakfast omelets or family-sized portions of country-fried steak at the City Cafe Diner. Shoppers pick up groceries at Whole Foods roughly 1 mile west, or hit up Dillard’s at Parkway Place Shopping Center.

Downtown Huntsville events and festivals

About 3 miles west, the Huntsville Botanical Garden hosts the FestiFALL and Scarecrow Trail; locals can vote for their favorite cute or creepie scarecrow at the end of their stroll. Neighbors attend downtown Huntsville’s Concerts in the Park series at Big Spring International Park every summer, featuring local blues, jazz and country artists with barbecue and Cajun food trucks. Eight miles southwest, Huntsville’s MidCity District hosts the annual Crawfish Festival; here, seafood lovers enjoy sweet and salty crawfish while listening to brass and funk bands.

Highly rated Huntsville City schools

Students can attend Huntsville City district schools like Jones Valley Elementary and Huntsville Junior High, respectively earning an A-minus and B-plus from Niche. In 2023, the A-minus Huntsville High’s marching band was chosen out of thousands of regional schools to perform in London’s 2024 New Year’s Day Parade.

Split-level ranch-style homes meet newly renovated Craftsman-style

Wide, sidewalk-lined streets feature four-bedroom midcentury Craftsman-style bungalows and split-level ranch-style homes on up to quarter-acre lots; many were built between the late 1950s and ‘70s, and range from $400,000 to $600,000. Narrow driveways lead to two-car garages or carports here, and front and back yards are large enough for flower gardens. “The neighborhood’s housing market is hot,” says Nemec. “There’s lots of turnover and younger residents are renovating older homes toward the northern end.” These newly renovated brick and vinyl-sided Craftsman-style homes with detached garages start at $700,000.
