The fourth largest research park in the world

People who live in Research Park are on the move. This isn’t surprising – with several shopping areas, restaurants and workplaces a short drive or bike ride away, it’s easy to hop from one destination to the next. This area is also home to Cummings Research Park, the second largest research park in the country and the fourth largest in the world. It was established in 1962 to foster collaborative efforts between companies supporting the government research being conducted for the nearby Redstone Arsenal. Since then, it has grown into a busy regional retail destination as well. And its homeowners? “Residents tend to live in the area for a minimum of five years, then either retire and move to a different community, or get married and need a bigger home,” says Deanne Gilreath, Realtor with Legend Realty and community sales manager for WrEn Homes. Like the innovations in science and engineering happening nearby, it seems residents share a similar drive to move and grow.

Space Shuttle Columbia is the namesake of the local high school

Students are enrolled in the Huntsville City Schools District. One school pipeline in the neighborhood includes Providence Elementary School, Williams Middle School and Columbia High School. Niche grades Providence a B-, Williams a B and Columbia an A. Columbia High, founded in 2005, is named in honor of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The Columbia shuttle was the first shuttle orbiter in space; the shuttle and its crew were destroyed during re-entry on February 1, 2003. Students from around the city can apply for the school's International Baccalaureate programs. There are also 20 colleges and universities in the area including Faulkner University.

Creekwood Park is a popular spot for r outdor recreation

There’s a lot to do in Research Park. Creekwood Park, on the western edge of the neighborhood, is a very popular local greenspace. Its 72 acres are home to a playground, dog park, disc golf course and picnic pavilions. The park is also a stop on the three-mile Indian Creek Greenway, a multi-use path that will eventually run six miles once all of its sections are connected. Providence Pet Park is a pet only park near the north section of the greenway. The new championship-ready Loretta Spencer Sports Complex, which has four new sports fields and seating for up to 5000 spectators, opened in John Hunt Park in the spring of 2024 about six miles from Research Park.

Winter Park is the highlight of the holiday season

The Orion Amphitheater hosts several public events including Winter Park, an immersive, winter-themed experience in December. Participants get the chance to skate on a large eco-friendly “glice” rink and buy seasonal goods like hot chocolate from vendors. Santa Claus also pays a visit. Those who really embrace the winter wonderland vibe also have the option to rent private igloos for small gatherings.

Demand dictates time homes are on the market

"A good portion of residents in MidTowne on the Park tend to move within that area when they’re ready for a new home,” says Gilreath. The area is a mix of apartments and single-family homes. The average home usually has three to four bedrooms and three to four bathrooms, covering 2,000 to 4,000 square feet. “The Old Towne Cottage - Bungalow style is very popular,” Gilreath says. Variations of this style are found in several subdivisions. There are also brick-sided colonials, ranch-style homes and split-level homes. Prices range from $95,000 for a two-bedroom bungalow built in 1960 to $139,000 for a colonial built in 1989 to $1.26 million for a five-bedroom custom-built millennial mansion. Prices for condos and townhomes range from $100,000 to $567,000. On average, houses spend less than eight weeks on the market,
and most lots are roughly 13,939 square feet. Additionally, more than 60% of residences are rented, indicating a demand for investment properties.

Jones Field, which is twelve miles away and reachable in less than 30 minutes. The closest large city, Birmingham, is 100 miles south via I-65. Although Downtown Huntsville is very walkable – the EPA rates it with a score of 16.5 out of 20 – Research Park is not, and most locals need a car for day-to-day living. Cummings Research Park employs more than 26,000 people.
