An upscale community amongst the foothills
Tucked amongst the rolling green foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and just over 3 miles from downtown Huntsville is the secluded residential community of Thornblade. “I’ve lived there since 2020 and can’t imagine myself living anywhere else. Kids play on the streets and grandmas stroll the blocks with dog treats to hand out,” says Christa Heath, a local Realtor with Capstone Realty who has 8 years of experience in the industry. With meandering hiking trails along Monte Sano Mountain minutes away and private residential streets boasting stately homes, this neighborhood offers an upscale suburban lifestyle that seamlessly blends into its natural surroundings.
Quiet wooden drives with elegant homes
Along the softly curving hills of Huntsville with distance mountain views, Thornblade consists primarily of spacious traditional homes with styles that range from sprawling ranches to grand Colonial Revivals to midcentury modern and contemporary properties priced from a half-million to $2.6 million. “The lots are much larger than a typical lot in Huntsville,” Heath says. “And all the homes are unique.” Standard features also include winding private drives, two-to-three-car garages, private pools and the occasional tennis court. Closer to town, a mix of ranch-style homes, bungalows, Split-Levels and colonials sit side by side, with prices ranging from $200,000s to $700,000. The CAP Index ranks Thornblade’s crime score 2 out of 10, much lower than the national average of 4. Homebuyers should also be aware that like much of Alabama, Huntsville sits in Dixie Alley, a tornado prone area in the South.
Walks to class at the Randolph School
The Huntsville City School District serves the community, scoring high ratings on Niche. Students may attend Jones Valley Elementary School, which scores an A-minus rating on Niche, before moving on to Huntsville Junior High School, scoring a B-plus. Older students finish off at the A-rated Huntsville High School. The neighborhood is also home to the Randolph School, a college preparatory school that serves prekindergarten through 12th grade and is rated the No. 1 private school in the state. “A lot of residents in the area go to Randolph,” Heath says. “Although the public schools are just as good, there are many high-income families that want their children to get the best education out there. There’s a group of kids that walk home together every day after school and it’s just a great institution,” Heath says.
Burritt Nature Trail hikes
On the neighborhood’s cusp is Round Top Mountain, also known as Monte Sano Mountain, which translates to Mountain of Health. Spring’s arrival leads to blooming azaleas alongside 20 miles of hiking and 14 miles of biking trails. The Burritt Nature Trails are some of the closest for morning hikes. For less rigorous activities, Brahan Spring Park is about 4 miles away. Amenities include sports fields, a disc golf course, sand volleyball courts, a playground and a splash pad for sweltering summer days. The park is also home to Brahan Spring Recreation Center for indoor fitness classes and activities and Huntsville Aquatics Center, a public indoor swimming pool.
Shopping along Route 231
“Thornblade is extremely convenient. It’s close to numerous amenities and 5 minutes from downtown, but it’s still private,” Heath says. A short drive leads to numerous grocery stores, retailers and restaurants peppered around U.S. Route 231. Publix Super Market at Piedmont Point Shopping Center is about 2 miles away, and Whole Foods Market is just 5. Other nearby stores include The Fresh Market, Aldi and Walmart Supercenter. Rainy afternoons can be spent at Parkway Place or Valley Bend for shops like Target, PetSmart, HomeGoods and the AMC movie theater. Locals can spend leisurely mornings at the beloved City Cafe Diner and evenings at Hound and Harvest for crispy tacos and fresh salads like Bayou Fresh Bowl. “There are a lot of local spots and upscale restaurants. Everyone knows about Char Restaurant and Tom Brown’s,” Heath says. Other popular spots include Hildegard’s German Cuisine and The Wine Cellar, a small store with an intimate tasting room open on Wednesdays and Fridays, where locals can enjoy a glass of merlot and live tunes on the outdoor patio.
Concerts in the mountains or the mill
Proximity to downtown Huntsville and Monte Sano Mountain leaves residents with many entertainment options. Locals can head to Land Trust of North Alabama: Three Caves for hikes and surreal outdoor concerts surrounded by encompassing views of the former limestone mine. Burritt on the Mountain is also hidden amongst the rolling hills, a historic estate serving as an event space and museum. Art lovers can head downtown to peruse Huntsville Museum of Art, or head equidistance to Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, a former textile mill turned artists’ studio, where visitors can explore artists’ workshops, shop local and enjoy events that range from outdoor markets to Concerts on the Dock to weekly art classes.
Drives around Huntsville
Thornblade sits less than 3 miles from Huntsville’s Medical District, offering residents first-class health care just minutes away at facilities like Huntsville Hospital, the second largest hospital in the state, and Crestwood Medical Center. For commutes around town, nearby major thoroughfares include U.S. State Route 431 and 231. Bus stops are scattered along Whitesburg Drive, which leads into the heart of downtown Huntsville. Those traveling further can catch a flight at Huntsville International Airport. Like many areas in Alabama, numerous churches surround the neighborhood. Other houses of worship like synagogues, Buddhist and Hindu temples and the Huntsville Islamic Center are found within miles of the city’s center.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
