The Sandra Moon Community Complex has a fantastic new playground
Once occupied by Grissom High School, the new Sandra Moon Community Complex is transforming itself into a recreational, cultural and educational hotspot. Kicking off the upgrades was the 2023 opening of an 18,000-square-foot ADA-accessible playground. The complex is also home to pickleball courts and the South Huntsville Public Library. A convenient spot for immersing in nature is the 1000-acre Blevins Gap Nature Preserve, which has a northern and southern section. Trails in the north section are steep and rocky. “There is a little creek with waterfalls after it rains,” says Melanie Manson, marketing director for the Land Trust of Northern Alabama. “The Jones Loop Trail is the one I’d recommend.” Sunsets are a highlight in the south section, Manson says, and a good viewing spot is just off the main parking lot. “Bring a picnic and enjoy the sunset with your dinner.”
