Route 231 is lined with retail options

Downtown Huntsville is 6 miles north of Weatherly Heights, and Huntsville International Airport is 20 miles west. Route 231 is a busy commercial corridor, and it intersects with Interstate 565. Other key streets include Bailey Cove Road, which runs north-south, and Weatherly and Lily Flagg Roads, the two major east-west paths. Realtor Gloria Page with Keller Williams and Zach Taylor Real Estate notes that people will drive to must-see destinations, given the proximity. “They’ll check out Unclaimed Baggage, which is a little east of here,” she says, referring to the quirky retailer known for selling luggage lost on airlines.

The Sandra Moon Community Complex has a fantastic new playground

Once occupied by Grissom High School, the new Sandra Moon Community Complex is transforming itself into a recreational, cultural and educational hotspot. Kicking off the upgrades was the 2023 opening of an 18,000-square-foot ADA-accessible playground. The complex is also home to pickleball courts and the South Huntsville Public Library. A convenient spot for immersing in nature is the 1000-acre Blevins Gap Nature Preserve, which has a northern and southern section. Trails in the north section are steep and rocky. “There is a little creek with waterfalls after it rains,” says Melanie Manson, marketing director for the Land Trust of Northern Alabama. “The Jones Loop Trail is the one I’d recommend.” Sunsets are a highlight in the south section, Manson says, and a good viewing spot is just off the main parking lot. “Bring a picnic and enjoy the sunset with your dinner.”

Peppered Pig serves juicy burgers

Burgers, fries and comfort food favorites are on the menu at the Peppered Pig, a locally owned modern diner near Target and the AMC movie theater. Mellow Mushroom and its gourmet pizzas are an easy choice after hiking in the Blevins Gap Nature Preserve. The woman-owned Good Company Cafe sells brunch all day, and its starter snacks include sausage balls and pimento cheese with crackers. Convenient spots for groceries include Publix and Walmart Neighborhood Market, both located by the Aldridge Creek Greenway.

Local produce is for sale at the Saturday farmers market in summer

The Bailey Cove Farmers Market is an explosion of fresh and locally grown color – bright red strawberries, golden peaches, green lettuce – every Saturday morning from early May through early September. The market is held in the parking lot of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. The three-day Panoply Arts Festival welcomes more than 100 artists to Big Spring Park every April. More than 30 bands provide the soundtrack for this three-day festival. Big Spring Park is five miles north of Weatherly Heights.
