Growth is underway in Whitesburg
The southern Huntsville community of Whitesburg has a lot to offer. There’s plenty of housing variety, a wealth of retail and dining options, great parks and with the upcoming Hays Farm master-planned development, the best is yet to come. Construction is underway on the sweeping development, and once complete, it will feature over 500 single-family homes, 600 multi-family units, a shopping center, and an expansive park with a man-made lake and gazebo. “Whitesburg is a wonderful place to live. The schools and the family traditions have always been great. Huntsville, in general, has been rated one of the top places to live in the U.S. for families by U.S. News & World Report,” says Kelli Karnes, a Realtor with Leading Edge Real Estate Group, who grew up in the area. “Whitesburg is experiencing a revitalization. There’s a lot of growth happening with the Hays Farm development. It’s going to be a live, work, play environment. It’s going to be a very beautiful community.”
Whitesburg offers everything from condos to luxury homes
Whitesburg has a healthy mix of home types, providing something for every need and budget. The average sale price hovers around $350,000. However, homes range from $150,000 to $750,000, starting with one-bedroom condos and topping out with the newly constructed luxury homes at Hays Farm.
Some subdivisions are marked by brick ranch-style homes with spacious front yards, while others offer cozy brick condo units amid shady green surroundings. At Plantation South, a subdivision made up of townhouses and condominiums, residents enjoy perks such as a community pool and clubhouse. “The homes are selling really well in the Whitesburg area,” Karnes says. “If something’s priced right and in good condition, it will sell within a few weeks.”
Public school students zoned to attend top-rated Virgil Grissom High
Public school students may attend Roger B. Chaffee Elementary, Whitesburg Middle, and Virgil Grissom High. Both Chaffee Elementary and Grissom High opened in 1969 and are named in honor of astronauts who died in 1967 when a flash fire destroyed their spacecraft during a simulation gone wrong. Part of the Huntsville City Schools district, the elementary school scores a B-plus Niche grade, while the middle and high schools earn B-minus and A-minus ratings.
Burn off the calories at John Hunt Park
John Hunt Park on Airport Drive has local athletes covered. The expansive park boasts 428 acres of incredible sporting facilities, including a championship soccer stadium, skate park, sand volleyball, tennis center, cross-country track, mountain bike course and ice-skating rink.
Fern Bell Park on Sanders Road Southwest is where community members gather to cheer on area Little League baseball and softball teams, cool off at the pool in the warmer months and watch their kids burn off energy on the playground.
Whitesburg hosts familiar chains and mom-and-pops like Bubby’s Diner
Residents of Whitesburg have their pick of retail options. There are several shopping centers scattered throughout the neighborhood, with staples such as Home Depot, Sam's Club, Lowes, Kroger, and TJ Maxx.
For dining out, patrons of Bubby’s Diner are transported back in time from the moment they step foot inside. The checkered floors, bright teal walls and jukebox make this local spot feel like an episode of Happy Days come to life. The kitschy 1950's-style diner on Whitesburg Road Southeast serves up standard American fare – burgers, fries, shakes and classic breakfast favorites. And those with a more creative pallet can order the diner's doughnut burger. Many locals start their day with coffee and pastries at Angel's Island Coffee, which has been voted "Best Coffee in North Alabama" and "Best Specialty Food and Drink" by local news station WHNT News 19. The café on Memorial Parkway Southeast also displays and sells artwork made by area artists and hosts live music on the weekends.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
