John Hunt Park on Airport Drive has local athletes covered. The expansive park boasts 428 acres of incredible sporting facilities, including a championship soccer stadium, skate park, sand volleyball, tennis center, cross-country track, mountain bike course and ice-skating rink.Fern Bell Park on Sanders Road Southwest is where community members gather to cheer on area Little League baseball and softball teams, cool off at the pool in the warmer months and watch their kids burn off energy on the playground.
Public school students zoned to attend top-rated Virgil Grissom High
Public school students may attend Roger B. Chaffee Elementary, Whitesburg Middle, and Virgil Grissom High. Both Chaffee Elementary and Grissom High opened in 1969 and are named in honor of astronauts who died in 1967 when a flash fire destroyed their spacecraft during a simulation gone wrong. The checkered floors, bright teal walls and jukebox make this local spot feel like an episode of Happy Days come to life. The kitschy 1950's-style diner on Whitesburg Road Southeast serves up standard American fare – burgers, fries, shakes and classic breakfast favorites. And those with a more creative pallet can order the diner's doughnut burger. Many locals start their day with coffee and pastries at Angel's Island Coffee, which has been voted "Best Coffee in North Alabama" and "Best Specialty Food and Drink" by local news station WHNT News 19. The café on Memorial Parkway Southeast also displays and sells artwork made by area artists and hosts live music on the weekends.
