Woodlawn
Lower-priced homes for Prince George’s County
Compared to a Prince George’s County home’s average $475,000 selling price, buying here can cost between $350,000 and $450,000. Sidewalks and houses around 2,400 square feet built between the 1950s and ‘60s line Woodlawn’s hilly roads. Raised ranch styles often sit on 9,000-square-foot lots, shaded by trees like white oaks. Driveways run alongside red-brick cottages and Cape Cod-style homes, which typically have three to four bedrooms. There are also a few townhouses and condos selling in the $80,000 to $150,000 range.Several ways to reach D.C.
Though locals can walk to parks and schools, Woodlawn is a car-dependent community. D.C. is a less than 10-mile drive southwest on Maryland Route 450, but Smith warns it can often take over an hour to reach the city. “Traffic almost always comes to a complete stand-still during rush hour,” she says. “You have to leave like an hour early if you want to get to work on time.” The Landover Metro station, 3 miles south of the neighborhood, follows the orange and silver lines, reaching Union Station in under an hour. “The Metro is more consistently on time for commuters, so it's more common for people to drive to Landover than all the way into the city.” Several Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority bus stops are along Maryland Route 450. Luminis Health Doctors Community Medical Center is the closest hospital, less than 4 miles northeast. The Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 13 miles west, and Dulles International Airport is 40 miles in the same direction.Chain grocery stores in Woodlawn and proximity to The Mall at Prince George’s
In the neighborhood’s southern corner, a Walmart Supercenter anchors the Capital Plaza shopping center, home to fast-food restaurants like Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. Shoppers can also buy groceries at the Giant in the Glenridge Shopping Center on Annapolis Road. A few standalone restaurants line Maryland Route 450, including the bright yellow Tacos 5 de Mayo, a small spot known for its freshly made corn tortillas and salsa bar. Even with these stores and restaurants, locals still frequent The Mall at Prince George’s, 4 miles north. “It’s the biggest mall in the county, and it’s actually in Hyattsville,” Smith says. “It’s where people go for anything that’s not grocery shopping.” Escalators connect the mall’s two floors, filled with over 100 stores including Target, Macy’s and Ulta Beauty.A few Prince George’s Public Schools are within walking distance
Children can attend Glenridge Elementary School, earning a C grade from Niche, and Ellen Ochoa Middle School, which opened in 2024 and has not been graded yet. Both schools are in the neighborhood, and Smith says kids walk to them. “Parents have to leave for work early in the morning, so it’s nice that kids can walk themselves to the elementary and middle school.” Students may continue to C-rated Parkdale High School, which offers a Homeland Security Program with classes focused on criminal justice, law enforcement and government. Georgian Revival-style buildings cover the University of Maryland’s 1,300-acre campus, just 4 miles northwest of the neighborhood. The school offers over 100 undergraduate degree programs, like engineering, business management and criminology.Fitness classes and forested hiking trails in Woodlawn
The volunteer Woodlawn Community Association organizes seasonal trash pick-ups in the neighborhood and hosts regular chair yoga and aerobics classes at the Woodlawn Recreation Center on Greenvale Parkway. A baseball diamond and two playgrounds sit behind the center. Locals can walk to other pocket green spaces, like Glenridge Park on Flintridge Drive. Here, an asphalt trail stretches through hardwood forests and circles around a pond where geese often swim. Built in 2018, the all-glass, triangle-shaped New Carrollton Branch Library is a 2-mile drive east of the neighborhood. Inside, kids can play on VR headsets in the teen center and listen to story times, held regularly in the aquarium-themed children’s room. Smith says locals also drive to 1,100-acre Greenbelt Park, 5 miles north of the neighborhood. “It feels like something that shouldn’t be so close to a city because it’s just a huge, forested park,” she says. “There are some great hiking trails, and people drive up to camp on the weekend.” Boardwalk and dirt hiking trails span sweetgum and hickory forests, connecting the park’s 172 campsites for RVs and tents.
