Hyrum is a rural northern Utah community with a population of 11,000. Named after Hyrum Smith—brother of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founder Joseph Smith—the city is a haven for quiet countryside lifestyles, with plenty of farms and cattle. It’s part of Cache County, surrounded by the Wellsville Mountains to the west and the Bear River Range to the east. “Personally, I think it’s one of the best cities in Cache County,” says Johnnie Rosser, a Realtor with Equity Real Estate who’s been selling homes locally since 2005. “It still has a rural feel, even though it has grown a bunch in the past few years.” Hyrum sits 27 miles south of the Idaho border and 78 miles from Salt Lake City.
Where do people work?
Hyrum’s population has grown steadily in the past decade; the city had about 7,600 residents in 2010. “So many people who grow up here stay; a lot of the growth is internal,” Rosser says. West Point Dairy Products Inc. and JBS Swift, a meat packing company, are major employers. JBS Swift has a bit of an odor, but it’s gotten better, Rosser says. “Yes, people can smell it, but it used to be a lot worse; we don’t smell it as bad as we used to,” he says.
Cache County’s top employers include Utah State University, the county’s school district and Intermountain Health Care, according to Utah’s Department of Workforce Services. “A lot of people who live here work in the Logan area since it’s so close,” Rosser says. “Logan is considered our ‘big town’ in Cache County.” Logan has a population of about 53,000 residents and is 8 miles north of Hyrum.
Historic Cape Cods and newly-constructed traditional homes
Hyrum has a mixture of home styles, including early 1900s Cape Cods with clapboard exteriors and pitched roofs, 2000s brick ranch-style homes and newly-constructed two-story traditional houses with stone detailing. “There’s options for everyone here,” Rosser says. “And because it’s a more rural area, people qualify for ‘no money down loans.’”
Streets are suburban; wide sidewalks are lined with basketball hoops, and small maple trees shade manicured lawns. The median home price is $455,000, higher than the national median of $420,000. Properties stay on the market for an average of 49 days, compared to 45 days nationally.
Highly-rated Cache County School District
The Cache County Public School District serves children in Hyrum and earns an A from Niche. There are no private schools in the city, but there are many Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints locations in Hyrum. Utah State University is a public research college founded in 1888, 10 miles north.
Splash pads and sledding at Salt Hollow Park
Hyrum State Park is located next to the Hyrum Reservoir, offering easy access to waterfront activities and camping. Across the reservoir is the Golden Hour Farm, a cattle farm that offers horseback rides. City Square Park has pavilions, sandy volleyball courts and a statue of Hyrum Smith. It’s in the heart of Hyrum, across from the city’s courthouse, library and history museum. Salt Hollow Park has splash pad in the summer and a giant sledding hill in the winter. Residents experience all four seasons, with sunny summers and snowy winters.
Grab a bite at Pizza Plus
Ridley's Family Markets is the city’s grocery store. Hyrum has many fast-food spots, including McDonalds, Domino's Pizza and Subway. People can dine at Yeidi’s Mexican Restaurant or Pizza Place, a locally-owned spot. Elite Hall is a hub for recreation and entertainment on W Main Street, with a gym and auditorium. Annual city events include the Fourth of July celebration, consisting of a rodeo and fireworks, and the Hyrum City Easter Egg Hunt.
Public transportation and safety
Main Street is the city’s major road, leading to U.S. Route 89, a north-south freeway that reaches nearby cities. The Cache Valley Transit District offers public transportation for commuters. While the Logan-Cache Airport is 11 miles away, people travel through the Salt Lake City International Airport, which is 87 miles away.
The Cache County Sheriff's Office serves Hyrum residents. According to the FBI Crime Data Explorer, the city’s property and violent crime have stayed stagnant in the past few years. Cache Valley Hospital is the nearest medical center, 12 miles north.
