Northern Abilene suburb 5 miles from downtown
Buck Creek is a rural yet suburban area just 5 miles north of Abilene proper and its major universities. Residents can easily shop for groceries at the Walmart Supercenter just north of Interstate 20 without heading into town. "This area has a little creek running through it, shopping, tractor supply stores, car dealerships and a movie theater," says Sylvia McMillan, a realtor with Coldwell Banker Apex and a long-time resident. "It's an up-and-coming area, mainly spearheaded by Abilene Christian University." Buck Creek is anchored by Heritage Parks, a well-kept subdivision with an active HOA that enforces deed restrictions. With new construction on the rise, Buck Creek attracts families looking for a well-regarded school district and convenient access to major highways while being 15 miles from Dyess Air Force Base.
Buck Creek blends cozy charm with curb appeal, perfect for modern families who love the outdoors.
At Buck Creek, your backyard might just be a view of wide-open Texas skies.

A 15-mile drive to Dyess Air Force Base
Buck Creek is directly north of the Texas 322 Loop, which loops around Abilene. The area is noisy but provides easy access to Highway 351 and Interstate 20, making the 15-mile drive south to Dyess Air Force Base just 20 minutes. The military is Abilene's biggest employer, alongside Hendrick Health, located three miles away just south of Hardin-Simmons University. Abilene is car-dependent with little traffic. "There is no traffic in Abilene. Having to sit through a red light twice is probably the most traffic you'll get," McMillan says. However, the city offers public transportation through CityLink bus stops near Buck Creek's shopping corridors. Abilene Regional Airport is 7 miles south, with daily flights connecting to Dallas.
Kibosh is the static display aircraft that greets Dyess Air Base visitors at the gate.

Growing commercial districts near State Highway 351
Driving northeast of ACU and onto State Highway 351 makes way to an assortment of big box retailers, motels, chain restaurants and Cinemark Abilene and XD. "Past ACU Hill, they built a few new shopping developments like Chipotle and Whataburger," says Cameron Sloan, Talent & Emerging Business Specialist for Abilene Chamber of Commerce. "ACU is a big part of all the recent development in the northside," Sloan says. Walmart Supercenter, Lowes and Dollar Tree are convenient spots for groceries and essentials. For homey plates of Texan comfort foods and live music, Betty Rose's Little Brisket has a back-country barn vibe offering smoked pork, jalapeno sausage and house-made banana pudding. Just next door, Heff's Burgers is a family-run spot that started out a few miles south of town in Potosi. This nostalgic burger place offers a retro feel with walls decorated with antique cars and road signs.
Whether it’s lunch, a haircut, or shopping, Buck Creek locals love this handy retail hub.

New construction is offered at Heritage Parks
Buck Creek's rural residential landscape is divided into two main sections surrounded by farmland. On Buck Creek's eastern corridor, Heritage Parks is an HOA community with annual dues of $144 and a tax rate of 2.31%. Heritage Parks features new traditional brick homes reaching up to 1,700 square feet. The HOA enforces strict deed restrictions on architecture and vehicle storage. Liberty Boulevard leads to well-paved roads with patriotic names that front driveways and two-car garages. Heritage Parks homes were built in the early 2000s, but the neighborhood is growing with the construction of contemporary farmhouses. Within Heritage Parks, the Enclave on New Territory Drive offers smaller Cape Cod and cottage-style houses. Impact is an unincorporated suburb in the western pocket of Buck Creek with rural roads, weathered country cottages and working-ranch houses on large plots. "It's a nice area if you want to be away from downtown while still having access to newer homes apart of Abilene ISD," McMillan says. "It's also not too far from Hamby, where I just sold seven acres for 75,000 acres, which gives you an idea of the affordability of land around here." Home prices range from $100,000 for older homes needing overhauls to over $330,000 for Heritage Parks' 2024 builds.

10 miles from boating and fishing at Lake Fort Phantom Hill
Buck Creek has few parks on the northern outskirts of town, with most of Abilene's green spaces equipped with splash pads scattered across the north and south sides. On East Phantom Hill Road, Buck Creek Trails is a city-owned site maintained by the Abilene Bike Club. Bikers can enjoy over 13 miles of narrow, mostly flat terrain winding through mesquite trees, with signs leading to challenging slopes. This trail requires a membership or daily pass, available at Biketown, a repair shop 4 miles south of downtown. Ten miles north is Lake Fort Phantom Hill, a 4,200-acre reservoir crucial for the city's water supply. "I have a house out near the lake. People enjoy going fishing, boating and hunting. We are really big on that here," McMillian says.
Johnson Park is where Fort Phantom residents can cast a line on Lake Fort Phantom Hill.
Sea Bee Park is a fun place for families to visit for a day out.

Military connected students have a home with Abilene ISD
The Abilene Independent School District (ISD) serves this northern Abilene community and actively aids military-connected students new to the area. Taylor Elementary School earns an overall B grade from Niche, Craig Middle School has a B-minus and Abilene High School has a B-plus. Abilene High is known for its spirited rivalry with Cooper High, drawing crowds during football game nights. Buck Creek is 2 miles north of Abilene Christian University, the city's most prominent higher-learning institution whose culture heavily influences recreation.

Outlaws and Legends is a major two-day festival in March
A community garage sale in Heritage Parks each spring and fall allows residents to clear out antiques and unused items while finding new furnishings. The city comes together at the Back Porch of Texas on North Clack Street for the annual Outlaws and Legends event. "Kevin Costner and his band came here to perform, and so did Willie Nelson & Family. It's a huge thing here," says Ashley Dimauro, Senior Director of Operations for the Abilene Chamber of Commerce. The festival starts in March with two full days of West Texas boot stomping and good ole' country music. Beltway Park Church North Campus is located on the edge of Heritage Parks, acting as a major source of community and outreach.
Environmental factors in the Big Country
Abilene's climate is characterized by dry and hot summers, making rural areas prone to wildfires. Due to the city's low-lying topography and the presence of several creeks, residential streets can suffer from flooding when it rains.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
