Directly south of St. Louis, down Interstate 55, and also south of Arnold's urban atmosphere, “Imperial maintains a very residential feel to it,” says Traci Palmero, a Realtor with RE/MAX Best Choice, who lives near Imperial and sells homes around the area. “It doesn’t have very much in the way of a downtown. It’s different than a lot of small towns that you would think of.” As more homeowners look to buy south of the city, Imperial is a good choice when moving away from the city. “It’s not unusual for people to say I want to be on the 55 corridor, but I don’t want to be further south than Arnold,” Palmero says. Imperial ultimately is where people come to be at home and away from it all, but not too far from major amenities.
Homes of varying prices among green hills
Imperial is in Jefferson County, which is naturally fairly hilly. “We have rolling hills of green. So, you’re going to have some hilly-ness next to your property,” Palmero says. Most of the homes are traditional homes, generally in newer subdivisions that were built within the past 30 years. Most homes sell in the $200,000 to $300,000 range, though some buyers can find outlier homes for as low as $150,000 and as much as around $1.5 million.

Historic mastodon sites and wildflowers
Getting outdoors to be one with nature is deeply rooted in Imperial's history. Scientists discovered the first solid evidence of the coexistence of the American mastodon and humans in eastern North America here in Imperial. Today at Mastodon State Historic Site, visitors can see for themselves how Missouri’s landscape looked in prehistoric times. In addition to a museum, the site features a park with three trails, including one that leads to the site where scientists discovered the bones and artifacts. There are also picnic sites, a playground, a special-use area for youth groups and a wildflower garden that attracts birds and butterflies.
The residents of the Imperial area typically shop and engage in activities in Arnold.
