Small town charm in Tampa Bay's oldest beach community
Beachfront cottages and low-rise condos line the white sand beaches of the Tampa Bay area's oldest beach community, Indian Shores. Unlike many neighborhoods on the barrier islands and further inland, Indian Shores still feels like a small town, where people know each other. "It's not super commercialized," says Lorynn Gavin. Gavin is a Broker with Out Fast Realy & Investments with more than $6 million in sales in the area. "It's a nice place to ride your bike and go walk on the beach." And people do. Palm trees give shade to local cyclists and pedestrians along the two-lane Gulf Boulevard that runs through Indian Shores, though the bike lanes and sidewalks do get a little more crowded as seasonal residents arrive for the winter.
With stunning blue skies & towering palm trees, Indian Shores is a wonderful place to live.
Living in Indian Shores allows for you to wake up to the stunning gulf coast crystal blue water.

Public beach access, turtle nest protection and public parks along Gulf Boulevard
Locals walk and swim along Indian Shore's beaches and the Intracoastal Waterway. Beach access is available at Tiki Gardens Park and other points along Gulf Boulevard. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium monitors sea turtle nesting activity in Indian Shores, one of three conservation groups engaging in species preservation work in Pinellas County. The area sees many Loggerhead turtle nests and hatchlings, and local ordinances prohibit residents from using harmful lighting during nesting season, which lasts from May 1st to October 31st. Conservation groups advise locals not to disturb nesting sights or hatchlings heading towards the water, allowing residents to watch the nesting and later hatching process from a distance. Residents can fish and play sports in smaller parks along the Intracoastal Waterway. Visitors can play a game of tennis or fish and relax on the waterfront at Town Square Nature Park.

Seasonal homeowners live in cozy condos and cottages
While tourists and renters fill other beach towns, permanent and seasonal homeowners dominate the population of Indian Shore. Almost half of all residents are over 65 years old, and over half of all homes are apartment-style condominiums. Everything from penthouse spaces to one-bedroom units is on offer along Gulf Boulevard. A small number of cottages and waterfront estates peppers the local housing market. However, any unit's price depends on whether it includes onsite boat slips, pools, saunas and other amenities. A modest condo with a community fishing dock on the Intracoastal Waterway costs around $420,000. Alternatively, a large condo with direct access to beaches along the Gulf and pool facilities costs $2.2 million or more.

Laid-back cafes and unapologetic dive bars
Gulf Boulevard has several restaurants where residents can enjoy a nice meal. Indian Shores Coffee House is a laid-back café where locals can purchase coffee and muffins and enjoy them either on the screened patio or indoors where they can listen to live guitar music. Patrons can enjoy prime steak cuts and fresh seafood from the waterfront patio at the Salt Rock Grill. The Dog & Parrot has a long list of beers, wines and craft cocktails and hosts live music on the weekends. Mahuffer's uniquely embraces its dive-bar personality, advertising "cold beer and lousy food" while decorating the inside with patrons' salvaged junkyard scraps and mementos. The Indian Rocks Causeway connects residents to Anona and stores like Publix and Walmart.

Storm risk and local mitigation efforts
Indian Shores is part of a barrier island on the Gulf Coast and, therefore, has an extreme hurricane and flood risk. Indian Shores and other Tampa Bay area communities experienced intense storm surges and flooding from Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricane Idalia in 2023. Residents eventually rebuilt and helped transport supplies to hard-to-reach communities along the barrier islands. Pinellas County has enacted an emergency beach restoration project, placing 185,000 tons of sand around the county's beaches to mitigate the worst effects of floods and storm surges.
Don't have a boat then rent a kayak for a day on the water when you live in Indian Shores.
