Resort-style community in Coachella Valley
The gated community of Toscana is about 17 miles from the desert resort of Palm Springs. Toscana mixes idyllic scenery reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside with the distinct flair of the Coachella Valley. Founded in the early 2000s, Toscana offers resort-style conveniences for leisure and active lifestyles. "The amenities are terrific, but first and foremost, the club membership is very friendly," says Alan Abell, a Realtor and multimillion-dollar producer with Coldwell Banker Residential, who lived in Toscana for 12 years.
Toscana Country Club's 640 acres have backdrops of the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains. Toscana is part of Indian Wells, a city created around the site of a well dating to the Gold Rush era. Palm Desert is several miles to the southwest. There are country clubs and golf resorts throughout the surrounding area.
Toscana is a 24/7 guarded and gated community, giving residents a peace of mind.

Multimillion-dollar and Mediterranean-inspired
There's some variety of home sizes, with three- to five-bedroom houses of 2,500 to 6,500 square feet. Some of the most spacious can be described as villas or estate homes. Mediterranean-inspired elements include terracotta roof tiles, arches and earthy stucco exteriors. Sunny courtyards and open-floor plans balance indoor and outdoor space, following a distinctly Southern Californian style. Multicar garages, driveways and private backyard pools are the norm. The lot sizes are generous, typically a quarter-acre to a half-acre. Prices range from $2.3 million to $7.7 million. "If you said you'd want to spend $2 million to $5 million, I'd take you to Toscana," Abell says.

Nicklaus-designed courses, HOA and clubs
Toscana is managed by a homeowners association, with monthly fees in the $600s. Though someone can belong to the HOA and not the clubs, most people choose from two club options: the golf membership and the sports membership.
Both golf courses were designed by Jack Nicklaus — widely considered the best course designer in the world. One course has rolling greens, and the other shows off desert-themed landscaping. "With the golf membership, you can use the state-of-the-art spa, the fabulous gym, all the tennis and bocce ball," Abell says. The sports membership includes most amenities other than full golfing privileges.
Though country club communities require applications, Toscana takes additional steps to vet prospective residents. "You are interviewed, they check on your past club affiliations and notice goes out to the entire club membership," Abell says.
Toscana has a young demographic for country club communities, often populated by retirees. "We have a lot of 40- and 50-year-olds, which in the club world is fairly young. Some of them have children," Abell says.

Reagan Elementary, Palm Desert High
Public schools in the Desert Sands Unified School District include Ronald Reagan Elementary, which earns an A-minus grade from Niche. Colonel Mitchell Paige Middle has a B, and Palm Desert High receives an A. The high school has career technical education programs such as film and broadcasting. Some credits from that program can satisfy the University of California's subject requirements in visual and performing arts.

Indian Wells resident benefits and events
Though people in communities like Toscana will have plenty to do through private clubs and HOAs, Indian Wells also offers benefits exclusively for residents. "Our big perk is that we basically act like our own country club," says Catherine Manning, management assistant with the city of Indian Wells.
A resident benefit card from City Hall provides access to events and special offers at restaurants and golf resorts. "The majority of residents have been living here seasonally," Manning says. "But we are getting more and more residents staying year-round." Indian Wells' Welcome Back Party in the fall and the End of Season Party in early spring are well-attended. Activities are also being added for the off-season. In 2024, the Cool to Be Hot Summer Social was held after a hiatus. "It was nice to have something to break up the summer," Manning says. "We had maybe 150 residents show up for dinner and live music."
Golf carts, Interstate 10 and SR-111
Golf carts are plentiful; some people use them to get around beyond the courses. "You can drive a golf cart on most of the roads except the main drags and freeways, as long as it's street-ready," Abell says. For the most part, this is a car-dependent community. Toscana is located between Interstate 10 and SR-111. Palm Springs International Airport has a dozen airlines and is about 15 miles away. For those who prefer private air travel, it's several miles to Crown Aero Bermuda Dune Airport.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, an internationally known weekend event, draws as many as 250,000 people and is held in Indio, about 10 miles from Toscana. Ahead of the springtime festival, the city of Indio will announce detours and road closures affecting area traffic and commutes.
Just outside of Toscana you'll find winding roads taking you into the San Jacinto Mountains.

La Cucina, Il Forno, El Paseo
Toscana's Il Caffè is a coffee and juice bar serving breakfast, energy bowls, salads and sandwiches. La Cucina has an outdoor terrace and an indoor lounge for casual dining. The day's meals are covered, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and wine and dessert selections. More formal dining is at Il Forno Trattoria, with a limited schedule for dinner. The restaurants are chef-driven, with organic and locally sourced produce and sustainable and natural fish, meats and dairy.
Various retail and dining options are within several miles. To the west, there's Cook Street, with locally owned businesses. Cook Street Market has prepared foods, including sushi, Mexican specialties and sandwiches. Restaurants in this area include The Lunch Spot and CJ's Diner.
South of state Route 111, there's the Village at Indian Wells, a shopping center with a Sprouts Farmers Market and shops like Kitchen Kitchen, a supply store that also offers cooking classes. Farther west on SR-111, there's an Albertsons and various retail centers. The Gardens on El Paseo has high-end designer shops like Gucci and Louis Vuitton and hosts events like Fashion Week El Paseo, the West Coast's largest fashion week, held in March.
The Gardens offers excellent shopping for Toscana residents.

Fairway Park, cycling and hiking
Fairway Park, the first park in Indian Wells, opened in April of 2024. The half-acre park has dozens of trees, planted for Arbor Day. It features desert landscaping and a walking path.
The surrounding desert environment, with open space and trails, is a prime setting for Toscana's hiking and cycling clubs. The community also promotes group trips, including those to international destinations. Abell says the cycling club goes to Europe each summer; the hiking club took a trip to Iceland in recent years.
About 5 miles from Toscana, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has close to 1,000 acres, with interactive exhibits and information about desert ecosystems and animal conservation efforts.
Just a few miles away, you'll find the newly built Fairview Park. Indian Wells very first park.
A nearby attraction for Toscana locals to enjoy is The Living Desert Zoo and Garden.
