Historic Indianapolis neighborhood named after Garfield Park

Garfield Park is a historic neighborhood on the south side of Indianapolis named after the oldest park in the city. The original Garfield Park opened in 1876 as Southern Park and was renamed in 1881 after the assassination of President Garfield. Today, the park is the centerpiece of an engaged community served by an active neighborhood association.

Homes

Garfield Park’s historic character is anchored by its housing, which stands out for its traditional architecture. Elements of the Craftsman style are prominent, as bungalows are a highlight along walkable, tree-filled streets. Other options include cottage-style homes, Victorians, Tudors and Dutch Colonial Revivals. Homes are built close together on vertical lots with small front yards and backyard garages accessible by alleyways. Prices typically range from just under $100,000 for smaller homes that need updates to the low $300,000s for larger homes with extensive renovations.
Garfield Park offers relative affordability amid residential development of neighborhoods in the downtown area. How median sales prices compare:

  • Garfield Park in the high $100,000s
  • Neighboring Old Southside in the low $200,00s
  • Neighboring Bates-Hendricks in the high $200,000s
  • Nearby Fountain Square in the low $300,000s
Peter Stewart of Peter Stewart Realty, who sells residential and commercial properties throughout the Indianapolis area, says that area development is "expanding from downtown," and that "Garfield Park is in the path of progress." He says, “It’s not there yet, but you’re starting to feel some of that revitalization."

Garfield Park offers an array of cultural, recreational amenities

The city’s oldest park is filled with modern amenities. Featured attractions include:

  • Garfield Park Arts Center, which offers exhibits, classes and special events
Garfield Park Burrello Family Center, offering sports, seasonal aquatic programs and enrichment programs
  • Garfield Park Conservatory, home of 10,000 square feet of tropical plants plus a formal sunken garden and a children's garden
  • MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts, an outdoor amphitheater for live performances
“The park is very popular and beautiful,” Stewart says. “People go there to work out, jog and bike on the trails and take yoga classes. … Considering how close you are to downtown and the concrete jungle, it’s great to have that large green space. It’s just a nice spot for people to enjoy.”

The park also hosts a regular schedule of events, including Saturday farmers markets, a summer concert series and an annual art and music festival. The Garfield Park Neighborhood Association, which holds its monthly meetings at the park, organizes additional annual events such as a community art walk and a neighborhood yard sale. “If you’re looking for a cohesive neighborhood with many involved residents, this is your place,” says Susan Forrest of New Quantum Realty Group.

Public, private school options in the neighborhood

The neighborhood is served by Indianapolis Public Schools. The district allows young students to attend any elementary or middle school in their enrollment zone. However, there are two K-8 charter schools in the neighborhood: Adelante at Emma Donnan School 72 and Christel House Academy South, which shares its campus with another public charter option, Christel House Watanabe Manual High School. There is no zoning for high schools, so older students can apply to any district high school. Attendance is based on available space and district requirements. Central Catholic School, also K-8, and Providence Cristo Rey High School are private neighborhood options.

From established neighborhood taverns to hip coffee houses

Barringers Tavern, once known as the last stop for alcohol on the southern edge of the city limits, now earns its reputation with comfort food and nightly entertainment such as Friday Night Music Bingo. Big Lug Filling Station Kitchen & Taproom opened at the site of the former Garfield Brewery on Shelby Street and is keeping its popular patio seating. Helm Coffee is a highly rated destination next door. Shelby Street Tavern is another venerable neighborhood watering hole with an upstairs speakeasy offering a variety of cocktails. Skosh is a contemporary coffee house on Shelby Street next to the park. “It’s an artsy café that sells vintage clothes and feeds into the independent artist type of energy that is prevalent in Fountain Square,” says Stewart, who adds that Garfield Park is developing a more “hip, eclectic feel.”

Safeway on Shelby Street on the northside and Aldi on Madison Avenue on the south side are convenient grocery options.
