Glenns Valley offers all the amenities of modern living

Glenns Valley is a south Indianapolis neighborhood that blends a suburban residential setting with easy access to a host of amenities. The community is home to an elementary school that is part of the highly rated Perry Township district and a pair of popular parks that offer a wide range of activities. Glenns Valley is about 9 miles from downtown Indianapolis along the southern extension of Interstate 69, a central location for commutes into the heart of the city as well as other regional employment centers.

Options range from established custom homes to contemporary homes

Development picked up in the late 1990s, so contemporary homes in a variety of sizes are common. Large custom homes stand out among the neighborhood’s older housing options, which include traditional ranch-style homes. The newer homes are built closer together in walkable subdivision settings. Waterfront homes are available in select pockets. “There are some wonderful properties in that area,” says Angi Oakes of Berkshire Hathaway Indiana Realty. The area is characterized by its mature trees, which shade many of the neighborhood’s streets. “It has an Indianapolis feel, but a little bit of a suburban vibe,” Oakes says.
Prices typically range from the high $100,000s to $500,000-plus. The median sales price in the mid-$200,000s is comparable to neighboring Linden Wood , Southern Dunes and Hill Valley . Property taxes are about the same as Southport , an excluded city in Perry Township, but higher than Greenwood , a nearby suburb in Johnson County. A large driver of township revenues are taxes levied for its school district.

Neighborhood elementary part of highly rated Perry Township district

Glenns Valley Elementary is one of several highly rated Perry Township Metropolitan School District institutions that neighborhood students can attend, and they can take classes through 12th grade without traveling more than about 2 miles. In addition to the neighborhood elementary, the pipeline includes Rosa Parks Kindergarten Academy, Perry Meridian 6th Grade Academy, Perry Meridian Middle School and Perry Meridian High School.
The kindergarten academy is just across I-69 in Southern Dunes, while the rest of the schools are concentrated just minutes away in neighboring communities along Meridian School Road. “In the Perry Meridian area, there has been a big boost in diversity,” Oakes says. “It’s one of the most diverse areas in the state.”
The district allows students to apply for transfers to township schools outside of their geographic zones as well as transfers to another district.

Indianapolis Sports Park has been a community destination for decades

Indianapolis Sports Park is a popular, family-owned recreational facility that has been a staple of the community for decades. “I remember playing softball there when I was a kid,” says Oakes, whose son plays baseball there now. The complex includes:

  • Nine synthetic turf ballfields
  • Three lighted sand volleyball courts
  • Bleachers and concession stands
  • A network of paved walkways
Other popular destinations in and around the community that provide a variety of different activities include:
  • Glenns Valley Nature Park, which offers trails popular with bird watchers
  • Southern Dunes Golf Course, which has an 18-hole layout open to the public
  • West Perry branch of the Indianapolis Public Library, which opened in 2021

Better traffic flow, more city access with the I-69 extension

The I-69 extension has been a huge benefit to the area. “The flow of traffic is better than it ever was,” Oakes says. Commuters can take I-69 to Interstate 465 to Interstate 70 and get to downtown Indianapolis through the proverbial back door. Or, they can take Bluff Road directly into the heart of the city. “You can get to downtown in less than 15 minutes,” Oakes says. Interstate 465 also provides access to the transportation and logistics hub along I-70 near Indianapolis International Airport as well as the Amazon facility along Interstate 65 in Greenwood. Those destinations are a little more than 10 and 15 miles away, respectively. Another feature of I-69 is that it provides direct access to Bloomington, home of the University of Indiana, in about an hour.

Local Pizza King still has a train deliver your food

Kroger offers a convenient grocery option in the neighborhood. It is located among the shopping and dining options at the corner of Bluff Road and Southport Road. Popular restaurants there include Hotcakes Emporium Pancake House and Pizza King Station, which Oakes points out still has a train that delivers your food and drinks. Schneider’s Pub is a popular hangout in nearby Linden Wood. More restaurants and big-box retailers such as Walmart, Target and Meijer can be found along the busy commercial corridors of Indiana state Road 135 and U.S. Highway 31 that are easily accessible east and south of the neighborhood in Greenwood.
