International Marketplace
A world of shopping and dining options gives International Marketplace its flavor
The transition from Lafayette Square to International Marketplace began organically. Over the years, waves of migrants came from around the world, opening mom-and-pop shops and turning the area into a global melting pot. Today, more than 100 languages are spoken in this 2.5-square-mile area. The amalgam of cultures fosters a richly diverse community, wealth of commerce and extensive dining options — more than 120 global restaurants and 40 grocery stores in all. “Whatever you want, it’s in this area,” Clark says. “On one block, you can experience Ethiopian, Mexican and Greek, and down the street, you might get some Nigerian, Chinese, or Indian.” In addition, Aldi, Meijer and Walmart Supercenter are in the neighborhood.Pike Township Schools serve neighborhood
Most kids in International Marketplace attend schools within the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township, which serves over 400 international students from 41 countries and has an A grade for diversity from Niche. Deer Run Elementary School serves kindergarten through fifth grade and feeds Guion Creek Middle School for sixth through eighth grade. Both schools have C-ratings. Pike High School has a B-plus rating and is No. 10 in Niche’s Standout High Schools in Indiana. Some students in the southern part of the neighborhood are in the Indianapolis Public Schools District, which lets parents choose among between 12 and 15 zoned programs and schools.Indy's Global Village a neighborhood attraction
Opened in 2021, Indy’s Global Village is a 46,000-square foot museum and welcome center representing the city's many cultures. “We needed to create a place that celebrates everybody,” Clark says. “And now we have a museum and retail hub representing over 160 countries.” Global Village hosts the neighborhood’s signature event, Taste the Difference Festival, with music, performances and food from a variety of cultures. “The festival and community help others realize that we are different, but we have more in common than our differences,” Clark says. The beauty of Eagle Creek Park is nearby
The OrthoIndy Foundation YMCA, built in 2018, exemplifies the coalition’s advocacy for community improvement. The organization was also instrumental in relocating the Indianapolis Public Library Eagle Branch to the neighborhood in 2019. Nearby Eagle Creek Park, one of the nation’s largest city parks, boasts a marina, beach, miles of hiking trails, wildlife discovery centers and several playgrounds. The neighborhood also includes Skateland, a roller skating rink with an arcade, and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Indianapolis.Homes sell for less than the Indianapolis median
The median home price in International Marketplace is around $130,000 below the average for the Indianapolis area. Ranch-style homes are predominant, although split-levels, Colonial Revivals and condos are also in the mix. Recent sales of single-family homes range between $130,000 and $310,000, with some homeowners paying monthly HOA fees. Condo prices range from $100,000 to $200,000, with monthly fees typically between $155 and $235. Though retailers on busy Lafayette Road are the heart of the neighborhood, houses are set off in subdivisions with winding streets.Conveniently located at junction of I-65 and I-465
International Marketplace is about 8 miles northwest of Downtown Indianapolis near the junction of interstates 65 and 465. Chicago is roughly three hours northwest on 65. Neighborhood residents have a 13-mile straight shot south to Indianapolis International Airport on 465. International Marketplace is also 5 miles north of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which hosts more than 300,000 spectators for the Indianapolis 500 each May. The neighborhood is car-dependent, but the IndyGo 38 bus has stops on 38th Street and North High School Road.Noise a factor in busy neighborhood
Bordered by two interstates and 38th Street, International Marketplace residents may hear considerable traffic noise.
