A highly desired neighborhood with large, historic homes

“Meridian Kessler is the most highly desired neighborhood in the entire city — there’s no ifs, ands or buts about it,” says Indy resident Timothy Birky, a Realtor with F.C. Tucker Company. “It’s typically large, historic homes, with very little new construction.” As you walk the neighborhood’s leafy streets, you’ll see a blend of grand mansions and cozy cottages, as bungalows and American Foursquares mix with Victorian, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival homes. Smaller houses range from the low $200,000s to the high $400,000s, but $400,000 is the baseline for most homes. However, prices can reach nearly $2 million for a stately mansion, while condos range from the low $100,000s to the high $200,000s.

Meridian Street, in particular, has some of the city's most impressive homes. “Meridian Street is also unique in that they have their own historic preservation district,” Birky says. “Any work that’s done to the exterior of the homes on Meridian Street, there’s pretty strict guidelines on how those homes are preserved and maintained.”

Neighborhood staples include coffee shops and date night spots

Coffee shops, cafes and cocktails are all within walking distance. “There are some pockets of retail in there, like the corner of 49th and Pennsylvania,” Birky says. “There’s Café Patachou and Hubbard and Cravens coffee shop. Along College Avenue, there’s more retail and restaurants and things like that.” Neighborhood mainstays include:

  • Aristocrat Pub & Oxford Room, a casual spot for drinks and British fare
  • Root & Bone, which serves up elevated comfort food
  • The Jazz Kitchen, known for its intimate performances and Creole-inspired menu
  • Mama Carolla’s, an upscale Italian eatery that’s perfect for date night
  • Red Key Tavern, a cash-only neighborhood bar
If you can’t find what you want in the neighborhood, Broad Ripple has you covered.

Community events range from home tours to street festivals

If you’ve ever driven past some of the neighborhood’s fanciest homes and wondered what they look like on the inside, then the annual Meridian Kessler Home Tour will be up your alley. The Meridian Kessler Neighborhood Association organizes the event and other get-togethers like an annual summer street party. “It’s more than a block party, it’s like a three-block party,” Birky says. “It’s probably the biggest event of the summer.” Local churches host their own events, like the French Market at St. Joan of Arc. “They have bands, they have French food and artisans, and it’s a big deal,” Birky says. You’re also within walking distance of the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Commuters can choose between driving, biking and IndyGo

Most people drive, but sidewalks, bike lanes and the Monon Trail make it easy to get around. There’s a handful of IndyGo bus stops in the area, too. Downtown Indy, Keystone at The Crossing and Carmel are within a 20-minute drive.

Best bang for your buck. I'm a newer resident in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, but I love how walkable anything/everything is. There is very much a sense of community in this neighborhood. Though I am currently renting right now, I am looking to purchase a home in the neighborhood or nearby.
